    Abstract:

    ABSTRACT Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an imaging modality that can be used to evaluate nerve, tendon, muscle, ligament, and joint disorders and to guide therapeutic procedures. A growing proportion of physiatrists are interested in musculoskeletal ultrasound as demonstrated by the increasing number of musculoskeletal ultrasound articles published in Physical Medicine and rehabilitation journals and quantity of musculoskeletal ultrasound courses and workshops at Physical Medicine and rehabilitation conferences. The Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program developed a musculoskeletal ultrasound course for their Physical Medicine and rehabilitation residents, which was implemented in 2008. A detailed description of the course is provided in this article. In addition, results from a premusculoskeletal ultrasound course and postmusculoskeletal ultrasound course practical and written test are presented, and the results of a postmusculoskeletal ultrasound course resident survey are discussed. This information can be used by other Physical Medicine and rehabilitation residency programs to assist in the creation of their own musculoskeletal ultrasound course.

    : Injury and illness in zoologic companion animals can lead to significant pain and debilitation. Recovery can be slow and sometimes frustrating. By augmenting recovery from trauma or disease with Physical Medicine and rehabilitation techniques, recovery can be more rapid and complete. Physical Medicine techniques, such as massage, can augment recovery from a painful injury or surgery by reducing edema, improving postoperative ileus, and decreasing anxiety. Familiarity with the tools of rehabilitation along with focus on pain management, strengthening, and proprioception improve patient care.

    Similar to traditional pet species, zoologic companion animals are subject to illness and injury. Therefore it is important to recognize not only the merits of traditional analgesia for these species but also the benefits of Physical Medicine. Physical Medicine is an all-encompassing term that refers to the use of mechanical touch and Physical modalities including cryotherapy, heat therapy, laser therapy, massage, and rehabilitation. Physical Medicine can be an integral part of recovery from trauma and surgery for veterinary patients and typically has fewer adverse effects than conventional Medicine, yet it can aid in a more rapid and complete recovery. Zoologic companion animals sometimes struggle with conventional medical interventions and may recover more slowly than other species, making these patients natural candidates for rehabilitation.
