the 65th symposium of the society for general Physiologists energizing research in mitochondrial physiology and medicine
The Journal of General Physiology, 2011Co-Authors: Sheyshing Sheu, Robert T Dirksen, Edward N PughAbstract:The annual Society of General Physiologists (SGP) symposium has a six-decade legacy as the premier and innovative international meeting for Physiologists, cell biologists, and biophysicists. During September 7–11th, 2011, more than 130 scientists participated in the 65th SGP symposium entitled “Mitochondrial Physiology and Medicine” at Woods Hole, MA. In a survey distributed at the end of the conference, participants ranked the overall science and quality of discussions very highly (average of 9.5 out of 10), with multiple respondents noting the highly collegial atmosphere, emphasis on unpublished research, and opportunity for younger scientists to interact with leaders in the field.

the 64th symposium of the society for general Physiologists optogenetics and superresolution microscopy take center stage
The Journal of General Physiology, 2011Co-Authors: Graham C R Ellisdavies, Edward N PughAbstract:Novel optical technologies applicable in cellular physiology and biology were the focus of the 64th annual meeting of the Society of General Physiologists, held September 8–12th, 2010, at Woods Hole. This is the third time the Society has taken up this “nonbiological” theme as a subject for

announcing the jgp journal club a publication for early career Physiologists
The Journal of General Physiology, 2011Co-Authors: Edward N PughAbstract:At the 2010 Editorial Board Meeting during a discussion about encouraging early career scientists to be actively involved with the JGP , Merritt Maduke of Stanford proposed the development of a journal club article, and the idea received wide support. The editors are pleased to announce the launch

Exercise Physiologists talk about sex differences.
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2008Co-Authors: Danielle S. DayAbstract:The number of publications addressing sex differences and exercise physiology has increased from 12, before 1970, to as many as 1344 through October 2007, according to a recent PubMed search. The following symposium represents three distinct examples of how exercise Physiologists are approaching the issue of sex differences in various aspects of physiology. Tarnapolsky presents data from studies of sex and sex hormone effects on substrate use, a factor that may distinguish between the capacities of women and men to excel at exercise performance at different durations and intensities. Harms and Rosenkranz provide insight into the potential limitations of respiratory function at increased exercise intensities in the female sex attributable, in part, to sex-based anatomic differences in respiratory anatomy. Milne and Noble discuss important findings concerning the cardioprotective aspect of exercise-induced heat shock proteins versus the inherent cardioprotection of elevated estradiol concentrations in young women. Each paper demonstrates the novel methodology and sophisticated research designs currently being employed to discern sex differences and sex hormone effects on various aspects of exercise physiology

the 63rd symposium of the society of general Physiologists muscles instead of squid at woods hole
The Journal of General Physiology, 2009Co-Authors: Robert T Dirksen, Roger A BannisterAbstract:On Cape Cod, a discussion of “mussels” usually conjures up images of tasty bivalves served with lemon and melted butter. However, the “muscles” of interest at this year’s 63rd Symposium of the Society of General Physiologists (SGP) in Woods Hole, MA during the second week (9–13th) of

emeritus professor reinhard ferdinand mathias van steveninck 1928 2017 and dr margaret elva van steveninck 1931 2017 plant Physiologists and electron microscope x ray microprobe specialists
Functional Plant Biology, 2019Co-Authors: T V PriceAbstract:This obituary highlights the careers and contributions of two eminent plant Physiologists. Emeritus Professor Reinhard Van Steveninck (1928–2017) was educated at Wageningen and London University. He joined the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Zealand, and achieved early recognition for his publications on abscission and mechanisms of salt uptake of plants. He was appointed Professor of Agriculture (Plant/Soil Science) at La Trobe University in 1976. He expanded his research into salinity tolerance of lupins and the ultrastructural localisation of ions using X-ray microprobe analysis. He was a good teacher and nurtured and trained many researchers in this area. He was a recognised expert in using a combination of ultrastructural techniques to study the movement of ions within plant cells and across tissues. His publications include book chapters on plant physiology, as well as a major review on the ‘washing’ or ‘ageing’ phenomenon in plant tissues. He was an active member and President of the Australian Society of Plant Physiologists. Margaret Van Steveninck (1931–2017) worked as a Research Assistant at Adelaide University and subsequently as a Demonstrator and Senior Demonstrator in Botany at Queensland and La Trobe University. Her plant physiology research with her husband resulted in numerous joint publications including a chapter on microanalysis in ‘Electron microscopy of plant cells’.
