Verification of the Effectiveness of Blended Learning in Teaching Performance Skills for Simultaneous Singing and Piano Playing

Nakahira, Yukiko Fukami, Miki AkahaneAbstract:While difficulty in acquiring a skill in simultaneous singing and Piano Playing is attributable to both instructors and students, instructors have been taking a variety of approaches to remedy the situation at least in the Piano Playing skill. One hardware-based approach to improving teaching has been to develop a system that is installed in a music laboratory (ML) and enables the instructor to check the level of skill of each student even in a group lesson. A music laboratory is usually equipped with some tens of keyboards. In an ML, the instructor can listen to the Piano Playing of individual students, and give private advice to each student. As such, an ML was considered a pioneering educational system for group training of music. MLs have been used for the training of not only Piano Playing but also elementary music theory, including harmony, which can be tried out using keyboards. It was thought that an ML, in which each keyboard is used by one or two students, was effective in teaching elementary music theory and Piano Playing because the instruction through an ML can efficiently substitute for private lessons in these areas. However, the use of ML equipment is so complicated that it imposes a considerable burden on the instructor. Also, since studentsĄf performance can be checked only during the class hour, an ML is not practical at all for classes with a hundred or so students. Consequently, there is still considerable reliance on face-to-face training when it comes to the teaching of music. Research efforts to improve teaching using software have mainly focused on a combination of two approaches: the development of appropriate computer software and the improvement of the teaching method itself. Approaches that involve the development of computer software include the following. In 1990, (Dannenberg et al., 1990) developed Piano Tutor, a computer-based Piano tutoring system for beginner-level Piano students. In 2000, (Hosaka, 2001) used audio-visual material. In 2001, (Matsumoto, 2001) used Piano instruction material for computer-assisted instruction (CAI). In 2005, (Suzuki, 2005) developed Net-CAPIS, which introduced a connection to a network in a music laboratory (ML). Attempts to improve teaching methods include the use of practice record cards ((Imaizumi, 2004)) and observation of others ((Nakajima, 2002)) . (Ogura, 2006) introduced blended learning using MIDI audio sources. 11

To ensure sufficient training hours, it is important to improve teaching methods. As a way to improve the teaching of simultaneous signing and Piano Playing in a large class, we have incorporated blended learning, in which students are required (1) to submit videos of their performance, and (2) to view and study e-learning materials. We have analyzed how each of these requirements improved students !Gperformance skills in singing and Piano Playing, and found that they substantially reduce the time required for individual lessons.

Tension Release in Piano Playing: Teaching Alexander Technique to Undergraduate Piano Majors☆

Much of the literature regarding the Alexander Technique tends to be guide books for various uses targeting actors, musicians, sportsmen and so forth. There are also a growing number of alternative medical research studies that examine the effectiveness of the Alexander Technique in reducing disability in Parkinson disease, improving postural equilibrium, and relieving back pain. However in the area of music performance, little empirical research has been carried out. In this study, fifteen undergraduate Piano majors from a local university in Malaysia were recruited as research subjects. Four major principles of the Alexander Technique were employed in this test. Observation was carried out and a report of tension in certain body parts was recorded. The subjects went through fourteen week of lessons taught by an Alexander Technique instructor, and a survey was carried out. The results indicate a positive outcome that Alexander Technique may help pianists to reduce tension.

Taichi Qi Flow in the Kinematic Process of Piano Playing: An Application of Chinese Science.
2013Co-Authors: Loo Fung YingAbstract:Reviewing different views and definitions labelling the psychological state of ‘being’ when a musician reaches peak performance, this study examines the hypothetical assumption that theories and movement from taichi’s qi flow (the Chinese medical term for vital force) may be a factor in contributing to what various scholars in psychological study as ‘flow,’ ‘peak experience,’ ‘heightened arousal,’ ‘becoming’ and so forth. The phenomenon and existence of the Chinese traditional scientific belief in qi flow is examined and applied to Piano Playing. Whether qi is just an experience similar to blood circulation in a Western viewpoint is considered. As a result of taichi motion analysis and practice-led research, three major factors contributing to qi flow are identified. The concept of yin and yang in taichi together with circular motion and the attainment of qi flow are highlighted. The article exemplifies a new mind-body concept from a taichi perspective and its application to the kinematic process of Piano Playing.

The theory of yin and yang, which is the philosophical backbone of all taichi movements, is examined in depth and its theory is employed in studying the traditional and modern approaches of Piano Playing. Selected components of taichi: balance between yin and yang, and the taichi diagram are found to give new insights in a Piano pedagogical sense.

The main aim of this article is to examine the classic Chinese concept of yin and yang and how it forms the movement principle in taijiquan, then goes on to investigate this further as applied to the concept of relaxation in Piano Playing. Relaxation itself can be contentious especially when it is employed as a technique of movement which contradict its original character of passivity. In this paper, views about relaxation from Piano pedagogues will be discussed. The research took on a practice-led approach. This article highlights motion analysis in a philosophical perspective. The character of relaxation is redefined using the concept of yin and yang as an analytical tool.
