    This paper gives sufficient conditions for pole-clustering in LMI regions for a class of TS descriptor systems. First, the class of TS descriptor systems under study is discussed and it is shown to be generic. A strict LMI characterization of pole-clustering is given. Using this new characterization, the design of state-feedback controllers is proposed, in order that the finite dynamics of the closed-loop system lie in a specified LMI region. The design of observer such that the state estimation error dynamics are in a specified LMI region is also studied.     User-specified benchmark has been reported in the literature for control loop performance assessment. A structured closed-loop response which is subject to simultaneous output covariance upper bound and pole Placement Constraint is proposed in this paper and served as an improved user-specified benchmark against which the existing controller performance can be compared. An LMI-based approach is used to formulate this problem and a cone complementarity linearization (CCL) algorithm is applied to find a global solution. An associated model approximation problem is solved in the sense of H 2 -norm in contrast to the use of H ∞ -norm of the previous work to obtain an optimal solution. The results are evaluated in a dry process rotary cement kiln example.

    A robust control scheme of a flexible transmission system in the presence of load variations is presented. In this approach, the loading variations are considered as multiplicative perturbation of the nominal plant and desired specifications are enforced by closed-loop pole clustering in an LMI region and several H∞ Constraints on different closed-loop transfer functions. A well known change of control variable is used to turn the resulting Constraint to a system of LMIs, which can easily be solved using efficient interior-point algorithms. At the end, weight functions are tuned using genetic algorithm. The resulting controller provides satisfactory performance for large range of load variations.
