    SUMMARY 1. Two species of freshwater mussels, Lampsilis radiata siliquoidea and Anodonta grandis grandis were measured and permanently marked with pointed, Plastic Tape positioned at the postero-lateral edge of the shell. Mussels were returned to original conditions at two sites in an oligotrophic lake, retrieved at yearly intervals, re-measured, and external annuli that had been added since marking were counted. 2. External annuli were formed much less frequently than annually; the overall median number of annuli formed each year was 0.5. In one of the four populations studied, the rate of annulus formation was >1 in small animals and <1 in large ones. Many mussels showed no new external annuli at all, even several years after marking. 3. Ford-Walford plots of shell annuli did not yield consistent indices of shell growth. Repeated measurement of mussels in successive years showed that estimates of growth based on shell annuli consistently overestimated real shell growth.

  • Disruption of barrier function in neonatal skin associated with adhesive removal

    Patients in the neonatal intensive care unit require life support and monitoring equipment that must be securely attached to the skin; removal or replacement often causes skin trauma. In this study, we compared the effects of application and removal of three different adhesives on the skin barrier function of premature neonates. The effects were measured by transepidermal water loss (TEWL), colorimetric measurements, and visual inspection. Thirty neonates, between 26 and 40 weeks of gestational age and with birth weights ranging from 690 to 3000 gm, were enrolled in the study during the first week of life. Pieces of Plastic Tape (1 cm2), pectin barrier, and hydrophilic gel were applied to previously undisturbed sites on the back. A fourth site was used as a control. We measured TEWL, colorimetric readings, and visual inspection scores of skin irritation and stripping at each of the four sites serially: before adhesive application, 30 minutes after adhesive removal, and 24 hours later. Thirty minutes after adhesive removal, TEWL, colorimetric measurements, and visual inspection scores were all significantly higher at the sites of Plastic Tape and pectin barrier removal than at the control and gel adhesive sites (p < 0.01), demonstrating greater disruption of skin barrier function with removal of the Plastic Tape and pectin barrier. When the neonates were divided into three groups on the basis of birth weight (< 1000 gm [n = 10], 1000 to 1500 gm [n = 11], and > 1500 gm [n = 9], the same pattern of greater disruption in skin barrier function, as measured by TEWL, was observed in each birth weight group. Twenty-four hours after adhesive removal, TEWL of the Plastic Tape and pectin barrier sites were not significantly different from the control site, indicating recovery of skin barrier function. This study demonstrates that a single application and removal of two commonly used adhesives, Plastic Tape and pectin barrier, disrupts skin barrier function in neonates of varying gestational ages.

    The relative temperature of the skin directly over the implant was measured in three patients. An impedance bridge with a pair of sensitive thermistors (each about 0.12 inches in diameter) was attached to the skin, one underneath the transmitter and one some distance away. Good contact was established with conductive paste and Plastic Tape. After an initial settling phase (‘No trans’, see Figure 1), the transmitter was applied (‘RF off ’) resulting in a rapid heating of about 2oC. In patient JV, the transmitter itself was cooler than room temperature when it was applied. Powering up the implant (‘RF on’) further increased the temperature by about 1.8oC (subject JdeW), but after 10 to 15 minutes a cooling became visible (patients CG and JV), resulting in an effective heating of about 1oC. After switching the processor off (‘RF off 2’) temperature returned to baseline, except in patient JV. In two patients, time allowed a last phase without transmitter (‘No trans 2’). The baseline temperature was not reached within the time window considered. Especially in JV a long-lasting residual effect seemed to be present.
