    Abstract:

    We report on a compact energy-scalable device for generating high-fidelity femtosecond laser pulses based on spatial filtering through a hollow-core fiber followed by a nonlinear crystal for cross-Polarized Wave (XPW) generation. This versatile device is suited for temporal pulse cleaning over a wide range of input energies (from 0.1 to >10 mJ) and is successfully qualified on different ultrafast laser systems. Full characterization of the XPW output is presented. In particular, we demonstrate the generation of 1.6 mJ energy pulses starting from 11 mJ input pulse energy. The temporal contrast of the pulses is enhanced by more than 4 orders of magnitude. In addition, pulse shortening from 40 fs down to 15 fs Fourier-transform limit yields an overall peak-power transmission of up to 50%. This device not only serves as an integrated pulse contrast filter inside an ultrafast laser amplifier but also as a simple back-end solution for temporal post-compression of amplified pulses.

    Abstract:

    The generation of high contrast and ultrashort laser pulses via a compact and energy-scalable cross Polarized Wave filter is presented. The setup incorporates a Waveguide spatial filter into a single crystal XPW configuration, enabling high energy and high intensity transmission, efficient contrast enhancement and pulse shortening at the multi-mJ level. Excellent XPW conversion of up to 33% (global efficiency: 20%, intensity transmission: 40%) led to an output energy of 650 ?J for an input of 3.3 mJ. Additionally, efficient conversion under specific input phase conditions, allowed pulse shortening from 25 fs to 9.6 fs, indicating the prospective application of this setup as a high energy, ultrabroad laser source. © 2010 Optical Society of America.

    Abstract:

    The characterization of a temporal filter based on cross-Polarized Wave generation working in the few-optical-cycle regime is presented. We show that this device dramatically improves the spectral quality of the ultrashort seed pulses, opening the way to the production of sub-10 fs pulses with high incoherent and coherent contrast. The dispersion compensation conditions for an optimized behavior of the process are experimentally and theoretically discussed.

    In this paper we present the first comprehensive study of the role of spectral phase on cross-Polarized Wave (XPW) generation using sub-30 femtosecond (fs) laser pulses. XPW generation improves the temporal contrast and shortens the pulse duration of fs chirped pulse amplification (CPA) lasers. For Ti:Sa lasers, compression below 30 fs is non-trivial and therefore never perfect. We therefore systematically analyze the effect of an arbitrary input spectral phase on the output spectrum and efficiency of the XPW process, both theoretically and experimentally. We derive the maximum acceptable value of residual phase for a given initial pulse duration in order to efficiently drive the XPW process for pulse shortening and contrast improvement.

    Cross-Polarized Wave (XPW) generation is used for the contrast improvement of ultra-intense femtosecond laser pulses in a double CPA configuration. We present theoretical and experimental evidence that the XPW output spectrum depends in a predictable way on the input chirp. Therefore, a chirp controlled pulse can experience a pulse duration shortening up to a factor of $\sqrt{3}$ , and an initial amount of chirp that leads to the exact preservation of the spectral width of a given pulse can be predicted.

    We describe a method that overcomes the observed saturation effect appearing in cross Polarized Wave (XPW) generation. The previously reported internal efficiencies for XPW generation are known to be limited to around 15% whatever the length of the nonlinear medium and/or the input intensity values are. At the opposite, the theoretical limit had been estimated to be close to 25%. Here we show that the saturation level of XPW generation efficiency can be drastically shifted up by using two thin nonlinear crystals put at a given distance one to the other. An internal efficiency of 30% is demonstrated experimentally using two BaF2 crystals.
