  • friedrich list s national Political economy and the post war east asian development experiences
    Social Science Research Network, 2012
    Co-Authors: Heeyoung Shin
    Abstract:

This paper is to trace the historical origin of the idea that the state (government) can and should adopt a series of industrial policies as well as protective measures to nurture domestic infant industries in order to show how this economic theory sheds new insights into previous debates over the role of East Asian developmental states. Many scholars on the East Asian development experiences have correctly pointed out developmental states’ industrial and trade policies for promoting outward export-led growth. However, least attention was paid to the (historical origin of the) economic theory that justifies this highly unorthodox market intervention by the state. The author claims that the original idea from the history of economic thought is best exemplified by the early 19th century German Political Economist Friedrich List, and examines how his policy proposals for the infant industry protection have been used by almost all advanced economies since then. This historical investigation of economic thought and actual capitalist economic development process can offer a new angle through which we can critically evaluate some of previous debates over the validity and replicability of the state industrial policies for developing countries nowadays. • polanyi classical moral Economist or pioneer cultural Political Economist
    Österreichische Zeitschrift für Soziologie, 2019
    Co-Authors: Bob Jessop, Ngailing Sum
    Abstract:

This article evaluates Polanyi’s work from two complementary theoretical perspectives: moral economy and cultural Political economy. Polanyi’s comparative historical analyses of substantive economies, their modes of distribution and the bases for their respective kinds of relative unity and stability, the rise of the market economy in and through its disembedding from more encompassing social relations, the social bases and motives for resistance to this disembedding, and its subsequent re-embedding in a market society are major theoretical and methodological contributions to the study of moral economies. Polanyi’s work can also be explored for insights that anticipate the emerging post-disciplinary approach of cultural Political economy, which combines critical semiotic analysis and the critique of Political economy. More importantly, cultural Political economy provides new theoretical and methodological tools for elaborating Polanyi’s brilliant insights into moral economy. © 2019, The Author(s).

  • Nicos Poulantzas on Political economy, Political ecology, and democratic socialism
    University of Arizona Libraries, 2017
    Co-Authors: Bob Jessop
    Abstract:

Abstract This article presents the inaugural memorial lecture at the Nicos Poulantzas Institute in Athens. It examines and extends the work of the eponymous Greek legal and Political theorist, Political Economist, and communist intellectual, Nicos Poulantzas, who radically transformed Marxist state theory, made major contributions to the critique of Political economy for the era of Atlantic Fordism and post-war American imperialism, and called for a judicious balance between representative and direct democracy to secure a democratic transition to democratic socialism. It first offers some general reflections on the originality, legacy and actuality of Poulantzas's work in these respects and then reconstructs his later views on the critique of Political economy before his death in 1979. Noting his neglect of the environment and issues of Political ecology, which was typical of the French and Greek left in the 1970s and also rooted in more general features of Marxist theorizing on nature and the environment, the article elaborates a Poulantzasian view of Political ecology based on key arguments from his work. The article concludes by reasserting the validity of his vision of democratic socialism, indicating that it would have become a critique of Political ecology, and suggests that he would have approached this in the same spirit of romantic public irony that was advocated by one of his major theoretical and Political influences – Antonio Gramsci. Key words: capitalist states; class analysis; democracy; ecology; imperialist rivalries; Nicos Poulantzas; productivism; state theory; the strategic-relational approac
