The molecular study was based on four plastid regions, rps 4 +rps 4 –trn S , trn L–F, mat K, and rbc L, and included sequences of 30 species of Pecluma (75% of the genus). The strongly supported phylogeny showed that three species of the Polypodium dulce group are nested inside the Pecluma clade and are sister to Pecluma species that bear pseudopeltate to peltate rhizome scales. Until now, these types of scales were not known to occur in Pecluma recurvata , P. hygrometrica and P. chnoophora , which were previously described as having basifixed rhizome scales. The results show that Pecluma , as currently circumscribed, is a paraphyletic genus, and some species from the Polypodium dulce group should be transferred to it. This study also confirmed the position of Pecluma chnoophora (considered Polypodium chnoophorum by some authors). In order to treat Pecluma as a monophyletic genus, this paper proposes a new generic circumscription and four new combinations for species previously recognized as Polypodium : Pecluma dulce, P. hartwegiana, P. longepinnulata and P. rhachipterygia.

New insights into the phylogeny of Pleopeltis and related Neotropical genera (Polypodiaceae, Polypodiopsida).

Most of its American representatives are assembled in a monophyletic clade that, apart from the grammitids, nearly exclusively comprises species restricted to the New World. The phylogenetic relationships of these ferns are still insufficiently understood and many taxonomic problems, such as natural circumscriptions of the genera Polypodium and Pleopeltis, were unresolved. Here we address one of the two main lineages within New World Polypodiaceae including Pecluma, Phlebodium, Pleopeltis, and Polypodium. Our study is based on DNA sequence data from four plastid regions that were generated for 72 species representing all putative major taxonomic groups within this lineage. The analyses reveal three major clades: (1) Polypodium plus Pleurosoriopsis; (2) Pecluma plus Phlebodium, and some species of Polypodium; and (3) Pleopeltis and related genera. The last clade contains species of Pleopeltis and Polypodium as well as Microphlebodium, Neurodium, Dicranoglossum, and Pseudocolysis. All species included in the clade display conspicuous persistent peltate laminar scales that are not found in other species of this lineage. Our results suggest a reconsideration of the generic concept of Pleopeltis with peltate laminar scales being the genus' key character.

serpocaulon polypodiaceae a new genus segregated from Polypodium

Haufler, Tom A Ranker, Harald SchneiderAbstract:We describe the neotropical fern genus Serpocaulon (Polypodiaceae), segregated from Polypodium, and make new combinations for the forty known species. Serpocaulon has been recognized previously as a putatively natural group by several authors, based on morphological evidence, but never accorded generic rank. The monophyly of Serpocaulon is strongly supported in chloroplast DNA-based phylogenetic analyses, using the genes rbcL, rps4, rps4-trnS intergenic spacer, and trnL-F intergenic spacer on 29 samples from 22 species. Serpocaulon is readily separated from other subclades within Polypodiaceae, and especially from Polypodium, which is less closely related to Serpocaulon than are several other genera. Serpocaulon differs from other New World polypods in the combination of usually long-creeping, sparingly branched rhizomes with clathrate (sometimes strongly so), usually peltately attached scales; regularly anastomosing (goniophlebioid) veins with individual areoles chevron-shaped and each with a single, free, included excurrent veinlet; and non-paraphysate sori in one to 10 rows between costae and pinna margins. In Polypodium, the rhizome scales are not clathrate, ± concolorous, and invaginated at the base, with somewhat overlapping basal lobes, and rhizomes are generally shorter-creeping and more frequently branched, the veins are free or forming a single row of areoles, and the sori uniseriate on each side of the costae. Most species of true Polypodium are north-temperate, Mexican, or Mesoamerican in distribution, while Serpocaulon is entirely neotropical or subtropical, with the greatest number of species in South America. There appears to be no convenient infrageneric division of the species within Serpocaulon, although the most widespread species, S. triseriale, is somewhat isolated at the base of the clade. Species with the thinnest rhizomes also have the fewest scales, and generally grow at high elevations. Species having the scaliest rhizomes, with scales spreading and strongly overlapping, form a weakly supported subclade, as do species with multiseriate rows of areoles between costae and pinna margins.

As famílias encontradas foram Blechnaceae, Cyatheaceae, Davalliaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Lycopodiaceae, Polypodiaceae, Pteridaceae, Salviniaceae, Schizaeaceae e Thelypteridaceae. Dessas, as mais representativas em número de espécies foram Polypodiaceae (5 spp.) e Pteridaceae (5 spp.). Os gêneros com maior número de espécies foram Nephrolepis, Polypodium e Thelypteris. Das 32 espécies registradas, 23 são ervas terrestres, três são ervas epífitas, três ervas aquáticas, duas arborescentes e uma erva hemiepífita. A maior riqueza de espécies e famílias foi registrada para a formação de mata periodicamente inundada e a menor, para a formação arbustiva fechada de pós-praia. Há baixa similaridade entre a flora pteridofítica de diferentes áreas de restingas analisadas e entre as restingas e a mata atlântica. Blechnum serrulatum e Polypodium triseriale são espécies de ocorrência comum em áreas de restingas.
