Having Poor Posture has been found to be a main cause of lower back pain as it impacts the transverse abdominal muscle. Maintaining a good Posture and changing position from time to time is considered to significantly improve and maintain personal health. The world has witnessed a vast amount of smart monitoring devices that are used to enhance the quality of life by providing different types of support. Smart wearable technology has been the main focus of this century, specifically in the medical field, where the advances range from heartbeat monitors to hearing aids. This report highlights the design, development and validation process of a compact wearable device that uses multiple sensors to measure the back Posture of a user in real time and notify them once Poor Posture is detected.

Stretching and Strength Training to Improve Postural Ergonomics and Endurance in the Operating Room.

CutlerAbstract:Plastic surgeons report the highest prevalence of chronic musculoskeletal pain and fatigue among surgical subspecialties. Musculoskeletal pain impacts daily life, career longevity, and economic burden secondary to occupational injury. Poor postural awareness and ergonomic set up in the operating room represent the most common etiology. Methods A literature review was performed to highlight the ergonomic set-up, postural pitfalls, occupational injuries, and musculoskeletal pain in the operating room. An institutional survey was administered among resident and attending surgeons regarding musculoskeletal pain, Posture, ergonomic education, and future improvements. Literature results, survey data, and intraoperative photographs were analyzed in collaboration with physical therapists and personal trainers. Results Survey results demonstrated that 97% of resident and attending respondents experienced musculoskeletal pain and 83% reported a lack of education in Posture and ergonomics. The main postural pitfalls included head forward and flexed positioning, abduction and internal arm rotation, and kyphosis of the thoracic spine. The collaborators developed instructional videos to assess Posture and biomechanics and demonstrate targeted stretching and strength exercises to address specific neck, back, and shoulder pain. Conclusions Poor Posture is unavoidable in the operating room at times. These educational videos should be utilized for self-motivated and prophylactic conditioning outside of the operating room to maintain physical well-being throughout a career in plastic surgery. Future focus should be aimed at implementing dedicated ergonomic education and physical wellness programs early in surgical resident training.

Hemodynamic Effects of Graston Technique on Trigger Points in the Upper Trapezius in Patients with Neck Pain

Commonly, Poor Posture causes tightness in the upper trapezius (UT) muscle due to sustained activity. This leads to decreased oxygen to the muscle and trigger point formation. Graston Technique® (GT) is a form of manual therapy that uses stainless steel instruments to break down tissue adhesions. GT on trigger points has been presumed to increase local blood flow leading to tissue healing and decreased pain, however, thephysiological effects on subcutaneous hemodynamics have yet to be proven.Objective: To measure active cervical range of motion (ROM), neck pain, and subcutaneoushemodynamics of the UT following a single intervention of GT in patients with neck pain stemming from trigger points.Study Design: Single-blinded randomized controlled laboratory study.Participants: Sixty participants (18-40 yo) experiencing neck pain and trigger point(s) present in the UT muscle volunteered. Participants were excluded if they had manual therapy within the past 3 months to the neck/shoulder, history of diagnosed neck injury, spinal, or shoulder surgery,cancer, kidney dysfunction, pregnancy, anticoagulant medication, varicose veins,polyneuropathies, diabetes, heart failure, contagious skin conditions, open wounds,thrombophlebitis, and hypertension.Interventions: Participants randomly assigned to: GT, sham instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), or control. All participants completed the GT protocol: a 10-minute arm bike warm-up, 5-minute treatment based on group, passive lateral flexion stretch, and 3 therapeutic exercises. Treatment area was determined by bilateral palpation of the UT muscle for the most prominent trigger point.Main Outcome Measure(s): Subcutaneous hemodynamics, neck lateral flexion ROM, and pain pressure threshold.Results: Increased levels of oxygenated hemoglobin (superficial and deep) in GT and sham groups (p\u3c 0.008) compared to control group. However, there were no differences found between GT and sham (p\u3e.555). For right (p=.025) and left (p=.002) lateral flexion, there was a treatment main effect. GT showed increased ROM compared to the sham (p=.019) and control(p=.017) on the right. GT (p=.001) and sham (p=.017) increased ROM compared to control on the left. No differences found among groups for PPT (p=.201).Conclusion: Overall, a single treatment of GT proved to be an effective treatment technique for the UT regarding subcutaneous hemodynamics and ROM in patients with neck pain. Individuals often present with Poor Posture, including forward head and rounded shoulders. In this position, the upper trapezius muscle becomes tight due to sustained muscle activity leading to trigger points as a result of decreased oxygen to the muscle. Graston Technique® (GT) is a form of manual therapy that uses stainless steel instruments to break down tissue adhesions. GT on trigger points has been presumed to increase local blood flow leading to tissue healing and decreased pain, however, the physiological effects on muscle hemodynamics have yet to be proven. Objective: To measure active cervical range of motion, neck pain, and subcutaneous hemodynamics of the upper trapezius following a single intervention of GT in patients with neck pain stemming from trigger points. Participants: Sixty participants between the ages of 18-40 years old with NS-NP and trigger point(s) present in the upper trapezius muscle. All participants completed the GT protocol which included: a 10-minute arm bike warm, 5-minute treatment based on group allocation, passive lateral flexion stretch, and 3 therapeutic exercises. Treatment area was determined by bilateral palpation of the upper trapezius muscle for the most prominent trigger point. Results: There were increased levels of oxygenated hemoglobin at superficial and deep depths in the GT and sham groups (p\u3c 0.008) compared to the control group. However, there were no differences found between GT and sham (p\u3e0.555). For ipsilateral lateral flexion, there was no treatment main effect (p=0.126), however GT showed increased ROM compared to control (p=0.043) with post-hoc testing. For contralateral lateral flexion, there was a main effect (p=0.001), where GT and sham showed increased ROM compared to the control, p\u3c0.001 and p=0.019, respectively. There were no differences among groups for PPT (p=.201). Conclusion: Overall, GT proved to be an effective treatment technique on subcutaneous hemodynamics and ROM in the upper trapezius muscle in patients with neck pain. After a single treatment of GT, participants received increased blood flow to the upper trapezius and increased neck range of motion. Further research is needed to establish GT as a superior treatment to other forms of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization

Effective Assessments of a Short-Duration Poor Posture on Upper Limb Muscle Fatigue Before Physical Exercise

It is known that sitting in such a Poor Posture with long hours will bring health issues such as muscle pain. However, it is not known whether sitting in this Poor Posture for a short period of time will affect human activities. This paper investigates the effects of a short-duration Poor Posture before some typical physical activities such as push-ups. The experiments are set up as follows. Fourteen male subjects are asked to do push-ups until fatigue with two surface electromyography (sEMG) at the upper limb. Two days later, they are asked to sit in this Poor Posture for 15 min with eight sEMG sensors located at given back muscles. Then they do the push-ups after the short-duration Poor Posture. The observations from the median frequency of sEMG signals at the upper limb indicate that the short-duration Poor Posture does affect the fatigue procedure of push-ups. A significant decreasing trend of the performance of push-ups is obtained after sitting in this Poor Posture. Such effects indicate that some parts of the back muscles indeed get fatigued with only 15 min sitting in this Poor Posture. By further investigating the time-frequency components of sEMG of back muscles, it is observed that the low and middle frequencies of sEMG signals from the infraspinatus muscle of the dominant side are demonstrated to be more prone to fatigue with the Poor Posture. Although this study focuses only on push-ups, similar experiments can be arranged for other physical exercises as well. This study provides new insights into the effect of a short-duration Poor Posture before physical activities. These insights can be used to guide athletes to pay attention to Postures before physical activities to improve performance and reduce the risk of injury.
