    Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate an experimental body Porcelain Tooth shade-guide system based on in-vivo color measurements. This system was tested against two widely used commercial body shade Porcelains. Materials and Methods A body Porcelain shade guide consisting of 16 tabs was fabricated from available opaques, body, and incisal Porcelains and modified with metallic oxide tints. The target Hue, Value and Chroma of these tabs were based on middle-site in-vivo Tooth color measurements reported by Goodkind and Schwabacher in 1987. Two control groups of body Porcelains were fabricated from Ceramco and Bioform Porcelains. A new Dental Shade Comparator was used in a clinical test of these tabs in visually matching middle sites of 300 maxillary anterior teeth of 103 subjects. Results The demographic trends in Hue, Value and Chroma were in agreement with those found in the previous study. Four of the 16 experimental body shade tabs were frequently chosen compared with 13 of 16 Ceramco and 3 of 25 Bioform body shades. Intraexaminer and interexaminer reliability tests showed good agreement using the new Dental Shade Comparator. Conclusions The 20 shade tabs that were most frequently selected as a 1st or 2nd choice ranged from 8.25YR to 1.80Y in Hue, 6.45/to 8.00/in Value and/2.05 to/4.15 in Chroma. The new Dental Shade Comparator is a useful tool in the task of shade matching. The current Ceramco II body shades contain many useful Porcelains that should be augmented with higher value and with redder, darker shades.

    BACKGROUND Differences in lighting conditions can make matching the shade of a single Porcelain Tooth to the natural adjacent teeth very challenging. OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to examine visual shade selection under 3 different light sources - natural daylight, a dental operating light and a color-corrected light. MATERIAL AND METHODS The visual assessment was based on a comparison between a shade guide and the target Tooth. One observer with normal color vision was asked to visually match the color of the maxillary central right incisor and the maxillary right canine in a group of 100 subjects, aged 22-40 years. Two shade guides were used - VITA Vitapan Classical® and VITA 3D Master® - in natural daylight as well as under an operating light and a handheld light (Demetron Shade Light®). The VITA Easyshade® spectrophotometer was used to evaluate the results of the visual shade selection method. RESULTS Significant differences were found between the effects of using the shade guide systems (p < 0.05) and light sources (p < 0.05). Overall, the use of the Vitapan Classical shade guide significantly improved the correlation between visual matching and the spectrophotometer readings. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the Vitapan Classical shade guide demonstrated superior agreement in shade selection as compared to the 3D Master shade guide. The Demetron Shade Light was proven to be a useful device for the color matching of artificial teeth in prosthodontic treatment. Visual Tooth color matching is a subjective method and it produces the best results under a color-matching light.

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strengths of two abrasion-resistant plastic denture teeth (Endura, Duradent) bonded to pour-type denture base resin. The bond strengths of abrasion-resistant plastic denture teeth were compared with plastic Tooth and Porcelain Tooth. The effects on bond strength produced by treatment of ridge-laps were also studied. Specimens were prepared and tested in accordance with JIS specification. The bond strengths of Endura, Duradent and the plastic Tooth were not statistically different, and those were significantly lower than that of the Porcelain Tooth. The bond strengths of Endura and the plastic Tooth were increased by treatment of ridge-laps surface with Dichloromethane and Duradent were increased by the same treatment and grinding ridge-laps.
