    Abstract:

    Preoperative hemostatic data were obtained on 42 brain tumor patients and correlated with the subsequent occurrence of venous Thrombosis detected with 1211-labeled fibrinogen leg scans. The occurrence of Thrombosis correlated significantly with an increased prothrombin time, plasminogen, and total fibrinolytic activity and a decreased fibrinogen level. This overall trend in the group of patients with Postoperative Thrombosis indicates that the hemostatic disorder noted in brain tumor patients is most closely related to a subclinical form of chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome.

  • The Postdischarge Risk of Venous Thromboembolism after Hip Replacement

    Abstract:

    This review deals with the problems of delayed Thrombosis after hip arthroplasty and the possible need for prolonged prophylaxis. These problems have been considered key questions in the European Consensus Statement on venous thromboembolism. There are several factors, such as long immobilisation, venous trauma and decreased venous emptying, which all may contribute to the development of late Postoperative Thrombosis. There are data on frequencies of venous thromboembolism supporting the occurrence of such late complications. In 4 recent studies on prolonged prophylaxis, it was consistently shown that prophylaxis with low molecular weight heparins for 1 month significantly reduced the frequency of deep venous Thrombosis compared with conventional prophylaxis during hospitalisation in patients undergoing elective hip arthroplasty.

    Abstract:

    Two studies evaluating the effect of Orgaran prophylaxis on the incidence of Postoperative Thrombosis in hip fracture surgery are reported. In one Scandinavian study, dextran was used in the comparative group, and in the US study, warfarin was used. In both, Orgaran was significantly more effective in reducing the frequency of deep vein Thrombosis without producing an increase in bleeding complications or other side effects.

    In a prospective, double-blind, randomized multicenter trial the efficacy and safety of low melecular weihgt heparin and unfractionated heparin were compared for the prevention of Postoperative deep vein Thrombosis in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Six hundred and seventy-three patients were randomly allocated to the two prohylaxis groups; 20 of these, however, did not undergo surgery and did not receive any prophylaxis
