  • Fast HEVC intra Prediction Mode decision based on EDGE direction information
    European Signal Processing Conference, 2012
Co-Authors: Thaísa L. Da Silva, L.V. Agostini, Luis A. Da Silva Cruz
    Abstract:

The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is an emerging standard that achieves higher encoding efficiency when compared to previous standards such as H.264/AVC. One key contributor to this improvement is the new intra Prediction method that supports a large number of Prediction directions at a cost of very high computational complexity. This paper presents a fast intra Prediction Mode decision algorithm, which instead of taking into account only the Modes of the neighbor PUs (Prediction units) uses edge information of the current PU to choose a reduced set of directions from which the best Prediction Mode (direction) is finally selected. The proposed method provides a decrease of up to 32.08% in the HEVC intra Prediction processing time, with a little increase in the bit-rate (0.9% on average) and a negligible reduction in PSNR values.

  • fast decision of block size Prediction Mode and intra block for h 264 intra Prediction
IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, 2010
Co-Authors: Yihsin Huang, Homer H Chen
    Abstract:

The spatial-domain intra Prediction scheme of H.264 has high computational complexity, especially for the High Profile as it incorporates the additional intra 8 × 8 Prediction Mode. To address this issue, we explore the hierarchy of H.264 Mode decision process in this paper and adopt an approach that is in synchrony with the Mode decision hierarchy. In particular, we propose a variance-based algorithm for block size decision, an improved filter-based algorithm for Prediction Mode decision using contextual information, and a selection algorithm for intra block decision that exploits the relation between the rate-distortion characteristic and the best coding type. Performance comparison is provided to show the improvement of the proposed algorithms over previous methods.

  • fast and efficient method for block edge classification and its application in h 264 avc video coding
IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, 2008
Co-Authors: King Ngi Ngan, Zhenyu Wei
    Abstract:

Edge is an important feature in video classification which finds applications in video representation and coding. In H.264/AVC, intra-Prediction Mode decision (a computationally intensive process) is based on the orientation of the edges in the macroblock. In this paper, we first investigate the difference properties derived from three coefficients in the non-normalized Haar transform (NHT) domain and present a fast and efficient method to classify block edge using these properties. The proposed method significantly reduces the number of computational operations in the edge Models determination with no multiplications and less addition operations. The use of edge classification for fast intra-Prediction Mode decision in H.264/AVC video coding is then presented. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • h 264 fast intra Prediction Mode decision based on frequency characteristic
    European Signal Processing Conference, 2005
Co-Authors: Takeshi Tsukuba, Isao Nagayoshi, Tsuyoshi Hanamura, Hideyoshi Tominaga
    Abstract:

In this paper, we propose a Mode decision scheme for 4×4 intra-Prediction in H.264 encoder to reduce its complexity. We focus on the characteristics of each Prediction Mode in terms of reducing its power in DCT domain since it is considered that reducing frequency components with higher level power may improve the efficiency of Prediction. The proposed method reduces the candidates of Prediction Modes by classifying frequency characteristics of 4×4 block, which are computed from its low-frequency components of DCT coefficients. We evaluate the proposed method in terms of PSNR, bitrate, and the encoder complexity. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme reduces the complexity by nearly 60 % while keeping PSNR and bitrate equally to JM.
