    Abstract Purpose To determine the diagnostic accuracy and optimum cut-off Value of SUVmax on PET to predict malignancy of supraclavicular lymph nodes (SCLNs) in patients with oesophageal carcinoma. Material and methods All diagnosed cases of oesophageal cancer were retrospectively reviewed (2010–2016). Patients that had a confirmed diagnosis of oesophageal cancer with avid SCLNs on staging PET were included in the study. 33 SCLNs that subsequently underwent ultrasound guided biopsy for staging were analysed. The maximum uptake Values (SUVmax) of the SCLNs and primary tumours were measured. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to determine the optimum cut off of SUVmax in predicting malignancy. Results 24/33 PET-detected SCLNs were malignant. ROC analysis identified the best nodal SUVmax cut-off to be 3.0. The diagnostic accuracy of PET was 76.0 % (sensitivity = 78.9 %, specificity = 66.6 %). For SCLNs with SUVmax > 3.0, PET showed a positive Predictor Value of 88.2 %; for SCLNs Conclusion Our study revealed an accuracy rate of 76 % for PET detected SCLNs in patients with oesophageal carcinoma. For SCLNs with SUVmax > 3.0, PET had a high PPV (88 %), which can minimize the need for further diagnostic tests.

    Memoria para optar al Título Profesional de Médico Veterinario.El visón americano (Neovison vison) es un mustélido introducido en Chile en la década de 1930, y actualmente se encuentra distribuido entre la Región de la Araucanía y la Región de Magallanes. En el Santuario de la Naturaleza Carlos Anwandter (SNCA), esta especie aparece mencionada hace más de 15 años, sin embargo, no han existido estudios que permitan dilucidar los posibles impactos predatorios del visón en tal área protegida. Con este objetivo se monitorearon 19 sitios a lo largo de todo el Santuario durante los años 2014 y 2016, entre los meses de agosto y enero, recopilando heces del visón e identificando los fragmentos de sus presas. Además, en el caso de las aves, las plumas encontradas al interior de las heces del visón fueron manipuladas según el método de Day (1966) para confirmar la presencia del cisne de cuello negro en la dieta de este mustélido. A su vez las presencias de heces con aves, sirvieron para determinar a través de modelos lineales generalizados (regresión logística), qué variables espaciales y temporales predicen mejor el consumo de aves por parte del visón americano en el SNCA. Se recopilaron un total de 455 heces de visón, mostrando una variación significativa en los dos años de monitoreo, con un aumento en el consumo de presas terrestres en la segunda temporada (2 = 12,589; g.l. = 4; p = 0,01347). También hubo variación estacional, consumiendo más mamíferos en invierno, y más crustáceos en primavera-verano (2 = 27,066; g.l. = 8; p < 0,001), y variación espacial, con diferencia en la dieta en los distintos sectores de la unidad (2 = 76,448; g.l. = 16; p < 0,001). Se confirmaron 19 presencias de cisne de cuello negro en las heces del visón, representando sólo el 3,3% del total de presas. Sin embargo, esto pudo deberse a un sesgo en el método diagnóstico que no permitió tener una óptima sensibilidad en el resultado. El modelo que mejor predice el consumo de aves por parte del visón, es el que incluye la mayor abundancia de aves en los distintos sectores del SNCA y la mayor cobertura de totorales en un área de 1000 metros de radio desde el sitio de muestreo Los nidos y polluelos contabilizados tuvieron poco valor Predictor. In the Carlos Anwandter Nature Sanctuary (SNCA) this species was first reported more than 15 years ago, but at present no studies about mink predatory impact upon biodiversity exist in this protected area. To determine the mink diet in the Sanctuary and the effect of different variables we monitored 19 sites in the Sanctuary during two years between August and January, collecting mink scats and identifying prey presence. In the case of birds, feathers detected in the scats were analyzed to confirm the presence of the Black-necked swan (Cygnus melancoryphus) by using the Day method (1966). We tested of presence of bird prey on mink’s diet presented spatial and temporal variation by using generalized linear models (logistic regressions) and Akaike information criterion (AICc). We collected 455 total scats of American mink in the Sanctuary observing a significant variation between the two years of study, detecting a higher consumption of aquatic and semi-aquatic preys during the first year, and an increased a consumption of terrestrial preys in the second year (2 = 12,589; g.l. = 4; p = 0,01347). We also observed a seasonal variation with a higher mammals diet presence during winter, and more consumption of crustaceans during spring-summer (2 = 27,066; g.l. = 8; p < 0,001), and spatial variation, with shifts in the diet through the distinct sectors of the unit (2 = 76,448; g.l. = 16; p < 0,001). From all mink scats analyzed, we only confirmed 19 presence of Black-necked swan representing 3,3% of the total preys. Nevertheless, this low Value could be due to a low sensitivity of the detection method used to identify at a fine-scale level of bird species. The best model to predict the presence of birds in mink scats was positively associated to the abundance of birds at the mink scat location and a higher cover of emergent vegetation in an area of 1000m. ratio from the site of scat collection. The number of nests and chicks presented a low Predictor Value. Based in our results, we identified important recommendations for mink management of the Sanctuary and the control of the predatory impact of the mink in waterfowl bird
