tinbergen revisited a replication and extension of experiments on the beak Colour preferences of herring gull chicks
Animal Behaviour, 2009Co-Authors: Carel Ten Cate, Wouter S Bruins, Jeroen Den Ouden, Toke Egberts, Han Neevel, Michelle J Spierings, Karin R L Van Der Burg, Agnes W BrokerhofAbstract:Young herring gull, Larus argentatus, chicks peck at the red patch on the lower mandible of their parent's yellow beak. In a famous study on the ‘instinctive behaviour’ of herring gull chicks, Tinbergen examined whether the presence, Colour and position of the patch affected the pecking of the chicks. While this experiment is often cited as demonstrating a preference for a red patch, the original data showed that chicks pecked more at a black-patched model (Tinbergen 1948, De Levende Natuur, 51, 49–56). Tinbergen later ascribed this unexpected outcome to a methodological error in his experiment: the red-patched model was presented more frequently than all the others, which made him adjust his data later on. We repeated Tinbergen's experiment (experiment 1), using replicas of the original models. We also did the experiment as Tinbergen described it later on (but which he never carried out), presenting all models equally often (experiment 2). Our results confirm that red is not the most Preferred Colour when it is presented more often than other Colours. In experiment 2 the relative ranking of all models was the same as in experiment 1, with the exception of the red-patched one, which was now Preferred most, as expected by Tinbergen. Our findings also confirm that the more frequent exposure to the red model in experiment 1 resulted in a disproportionate decline in interest for this model. So, although he never did the actual experiment, Tinbergen's intuition and corrected data show a reasonable match to the results of our experiment.

research of natural lip Colour and Preferred lip Colour
2021Co-Authors: Liyi Zhang, Jiapei Chen, Mengmeng WangAbstract:Lip is an important character of the face. Many previous researches studied the Colour of the lip. They found the lip Colour and perception of the face healthy and attractiveness have significant connection. The lip Colour, as a key feature, are widely interested by the cosmetic industry and imaging industry, especially the Preferred lip Colour. In this study, the natural Colour of the lips and the Preferred Colour of the lips were investigated to further quantify Preferred lip Colour. The natural lip Colour gamut has small variation in chroma. The lightness was darker than the average skin Colour of the same ethnicities. A psychophysics experiment was carried out to determine the Colour properties of this preference. Fifty participants’ data were collected. The result shows that the lip Colour that with similar hue angle to the natural lip were Preferred.

Preferred skin Colour reproduction
2011Co-Authors: Huanzhao ZengAbstract:The memory Colour reproduction is an important factor in judging image quality of photographic images of real life scenes. As the most important memory Colour category, skin tone was extensively studied for Preferred Colour reproduction in this research. The methodology to study skin Colour preference was then applied to study the Colour preference of two other important Colour categories: green foliage and blue sky. There are three essential parts for Preferred skin Colour enhancement: 1) building a skin Colour model to detect skin Colours or skin pixels; 2) finding a Preferred skin Colour region or a Preferred skin Colour centre; and 3) developing an algorithm to morph skin Colours toward the Preferred skin Colour region. This study for skin Colour enhancement started with the mathematical modelling of the skin Colour region for skin Colour detection. The modelling of skin Colours was then applied to adjust skin Colours of test images for psychophysical experiments that were to determine a Preferred skin Colour region. Finally, the skin Colour modelling and the Preferred skin Colour centres were applied to adjust skin Colours of digital photographic images for Preferred Colour reproduction. Two approaches were developed to model the skin Colour distribution for skin Colour detection. The first approach was to model a local Colour region for general applications. A convex hull is constructed to fit the geometrical shape of a local region, and then the convex hull is approximated with mathematical formulae. The formulations and data fitting are adjusted with interactive 3-D visualization. The approach is flexible for fitting data gamut with various mathematical forms for different purposes. The other approach was to model skin Colours with elliptical shapes. Three elliptical skin Colour models were developed for skin Colour detection. The first one is to model the skin Colour cluster using a single ellipse ignoring the lightness (or luminance) dependency. It is simple and efficient, and the skin Colour detection accuracy may be adequate for many applications. In the second model, the skin Colour ellipse is adapted to different lightness so that the shape of the ellipse fits the skin Colour cluster more accurately. The model is more complex to train and is less efficient in computation, but it is more accurate in skin Colour detection. In the third method, an ellipsoid is trained to fit the skin Colour cluster. It is almost as simple to train as the first model, but the skin Colour detection accuracy is improved. Finally, these models were applied to train mixed skin Colours, African skin Colours, Caucasian skin Colours, and Asian skin Colours.

modelling memory Colour region for preference Colour reproduction
Proceedings of SPIE, 2010Co-Authors: Huanzhao Zeng, Ronnier LuoAbstract:Colour preference adjustment is an essential step for Colour image enhancement and perceptual gamut mapping. In Colour reproduction for pictorial images, properly shifting Colours away from their colorimetric originals may produce more Preferred Colour reproduction result. Memory Colours, as a portion of the Colour regions for Colour preference adjustment, are especially important for preference Colour reproduction. Identifying memory Colours or modelling the memory Colour region is a basic step to study Preferred memory Colour enhancement. In this study, we first created gamut for each memory Colour region represented as a convex hull, and then used the convex hull to guide mathematical modelling to formulate the Colour region for Colour enhancement.

introduction to a study of Preferred Colour rendering of light sources
Lighting Research & Technology, 2015Co-Authors: Janos Schanda, Ferenc Szabo, Peter Csuti, Pramod Bhusal, Liisa HalonenAbstract:The European Union has financed a 3-year research project to establish optimal spectral power distributions of LED light sources for use in offices, commerce and homes. This paper summarizes the general questions relevant to Colour preference investigations and introduces the investigations performed in the three laboratories that participated in the research. Subsequent papers will deal with details of the investigations and provide recommendations for optimum spectra in different indoor applications.
