    Abstract:

    At any site, the bankability of a projected solar power plant largely depends on the accuracy and general quality of the solar radiation data generated during the solar resource assessment phase. The term “site adaptation” has recently started to be used in the framework of solar energy projects to refer to the improvement that can be achieved in satellite-derived solar irradiance and model data when short-term local ground measurements are used to correct systematic errors and bias in the original dataset. This contribution presents a Preliminary Survey of different possible techniques that can improve long-term satellite-derived and model-derived solar radiation data through the use of short-term on-site ground measurements. The possible approaches that are reported here may be applied in different ways, depending on the origin and characteristics of the uncertainties in the modeled data. This work, which is the first step of a forthcoming in-depth assessment of methodologies for site adaptation, has been done within the framework of the International Energy Agency Solar Heating and Cooling Programme Task 46 “Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting”.

  • A Preliminary Survey of Bryophytes in the Central Province of Sri Lanka

    Abstract:

    Bryophytes possess a key position in land plant evolution and hold the link between green algal ancestors and vascular plants. Bryophytes comprise the most diverse and species rich group of land plants after flowering plants. The most recent classification includes bryophytes in three phyla: Marchantiophyta (liverworts), Bryophyta (mosses) and Anthocerotophyta (hornworts). Bryophyte flora of Sri Lanka is poorly researched and does not contribute much to its biodiversity figures. Therefore, a Preliminary Survey was carried out in the Central Province of Sri Lanka to aid future bryological research in the country. This on-going Survey has identified 15 liverworts, 27 mosses and 2 hornworts, with 12 new species records in Sri Lanka.     Abstract:

    This Preliminary Survey of the reading interests of A.A. U. students is a descriptive study based on questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Addis AbabaUniversity students were the target subjects of the study. However, instructors, librarians and personal observations were used as additional sources of data. The result of the study indicates that most of the subjects do read materials outside their courses in their free time. However, the amount of reading is very small. They appear to have no specific reading interests largely due to lack of variety in the reading materials they manage to read. Their leisure reading in English has a utilitarian purpose. That is, they read ill English both for language improvement and for pleasure.
