  • socioeconomic status and consumption in an emerging economy
International Journal of Research in Marketing, 2013
Co-Authors: Wagner A Kamakura, Jose Afonso Mazzon
    Abstract:

Abstract Despite the central role of social class or socioeconomic status on consumer behavior and the fact that this construct has been utilized in Marketing research for more than seven decades, the Marketing literature is surprisingly lacking in the conceptualization and measurement of this important construct. In this study, we address these issues and propose a flexible and robust theory-based framework for socioeconomic stratification, which we apply to identify socio-economic strata during a period (2003 and 2009) of substantial economic and social development in one emerging economy (Brazil). We then use this stratification to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status and consumption. Our socioeconomic stratification framework shows how the recent economic development observed in Brazil benefited the lower strata, leading to the emergence of the country's “new middle class.” We also find that despite the high income concentration still prevalent in Brazil, consumption in many product categories is more evenly distributed; therefore, firms would be ill-advised to follow a Premium Market positioning strategy targeted mostly to the upper classes because this would leave a substantial portion of the Market to the competition.

  • on chinese firm s preference for fund collection by initial public offering from the perspective of reputation Premium Market power and cash dividends
    Shanghai Journal of Economics, 2014
    Co-Authors: Tian Suhu
    Abstract:

China firm's preference for fund collection by Initial Public Offering has received broad attention over the past decades. Most literatures addressing that phenomenon are based on the perspectives of financing cost, the special equity structure and the asymmetric information theory. This paper takes into consideration reputation Premium that the firms acquire in the IPO,firm's Market power and cash dividends, which provides a new explanation to Chinese firms' preference for equity financing. This paper holds that the firms with higher reputation Premium will be more likely to collect more funds by IPO,while strong Market power shows no significant relation to equity financing preference. The firms with high reputation Premium and high Market power are inclined to pay cash dividends. The conclusions help to improve the dividends payment system and the quitting regulations of listed firms in Chinese securities Market, offering important policy implications for the reform of the Chinese capital Market.

  • innovation in an expanding Market australian pork is not a commodity
    Animal Production Science, 2017
    Co-Authors: E P Bittner, Hollis Ashman, M Hastie, R J Van Barneveld, Adrian H Hearn, Nicholas Thomson, F R Dunshea
    Abstract:

The growing Asian middle class, the proliferation of export Markets and a more discerning domestic consumer base are creating new opportunities and challenges for the Australian pork industry. To fully capitalise on these opportunities and face these new challenges, the right questions need to be asked by the Australian pork industry. We need to know not only what our consumers want, but who our consumers are. The present paper aims to demonstrate that novel approaches to investigate consumer attitudes will be required, and it cannot be assumed that current productions systems, products and Marketing strategies are optimal for the changing environment and the creation of new Premium Market opportunities. With new Markets and new products come new consumers; identifying who those consumers are, the networks they operate within as food consumers, and what influences their purchasing decisions are the key to their adopting Australian pork as Premium produce in a new global Market.
