During the design and development of this type of software we have realized the existing modeling approaches were not well suited for the modeling of JSF or ASP.NET MVC applications. This paper extends UML for the modeling of the Presentation Tier of enterprise applications based on JSF or ASP.NET MVC frameworks. Our main aim was to include navigational, structural and role-based access control (RBAC) elements for JSF/ASP.NET MVC applications in UML class and sequence diagrams built according to multiTier patterns. Accordingly, our approach: (i) characterizes the navigational, structural and RBAC elements of JSF/ASP.NET MVC frameworks; (ii) does not define a proprietary notation but provides two platform-specific UML profiles that extend UML-WAE; (iii) is able to include any multiTier, service-oriented architecture and security design-level pattern in the models; (iv) provides models whose semantics can be directly translated into code; and therefore, (v) decouples code maintenance from specific tools. This approach has been successfully used in the design of a complex e-learning web application deployed by our research group.

NMMp: A Model-Driven UML Extension for the Description of Navigation Maps for Web Applications

Moreover, complex web applications can have thousands of linked web pages built using different technologies. As a result, the description of navigation maps has become more complex in recent years. This paper presents NMMp, a UML extension that: (i) provides an abstract vision of the navigation structure of the Presentation Tier of web applications, independently of architectural details or programming languages; (ii) can be automatically transformed into UML-WAE class diagrams, which can be easily integrated with the design of the other Tiers of the web application; (iii) encourages the use of architectural and multiTier design patterns; and (iv) has been developed according to OMG standards, thus facilitating its use with general purpose UML CASE tools in industry.

Multiple disciplines bring together earth and ground based observation themes, such as environmental monitoring, water management, demographics, economy, information technology, and infrastructural systems. This paper introduces the components of the web-based WISDOM system including data, logic and Presentation Tier. It focuses on the data models upon which the database management system is built, including techniques for tagging or linking metadata with the stored information. The model also uses ordered groupings of spatial, thematic and temporal reference objects to semantically tag datasets to enable fast data retrieval, such as finding all data in a specific administrative unit belonging to a specific theme. A spatial database extension is employed by the PostgreSQL database. This object-oriented database was chosen over a relational database to tag spatial objects to tabular data, improving the retrieval of census and observational data at regional, provincial, and local areas. While the spatial database hinders processing raster data, a ''work-around'' was built into WISDOM to permit efficient management of both raster and vector data. The data model also incorporates styling aspects of the spatial datasets through styled layer descriptions (SLD) and web mapping service (WMS) layer specifications, allowing retrieval of rendered maps. Metadata elements of the spatial data are based on the ISO19115 standard. XML structured information of the SLD and metadata are stored in an XML database. The data models and the data management system are robust for managing the large quantity of spatial objects, sensor observations, census and document data. The operational WISDOM information system prototype contains modules for data management, automatic data integration, and web services for data retrieval, analysis, and distribution. The graphical user interfaces facilitate metadata cataloguing, data warehousing, web sensor data analysis and thematic mapping.

Leveraging declarative languages in web application development

They are easy to use, but hard to develop. WYSIWYG editors, form builders, mashup editors, and markup authoring tools ease the development of Web Applications. However, more advanced Web Applications require servers-side programming, which is beyond the skills of end-user developers. In this paper, we discuss how declarative languages can simplify Web Application development and empower end-users as Web developers. We first identify nine end-user Web Application development levels ranging from simple visual customization to advanced three-Tier programming. Then, we propose expanding the Presentation Tier to support all aspects of Web Application development. We introduce a unified XForms-based framework—called XFormsDB—that supports both client-side and server-side Web Application development. Furthermore, we make a language extension proposal—called XFormsRTC—for adding true real-time communication capabilities to XForms. We also present XFormsDB Integrated Development Environment (XIDE), which assists end-users in authoring highly interactive data-driven Web Applications. XIDE supports all Web Application development levels and, especially, promotes the transition from markup authoring and snippet programming to single and unified language programming.

XFormsDB: an extensible web application framework built upon declarative W3C standards

The main disadvantage of this architecture is that it requires expertise in multiple programming languages, programming paradigms, and data models used in each Tier. A single expert rarely masters all the technologies and concepts involved. In this paper, we introduce a Tier-expanding architectural approach that unifies the client-side (Presentation Tier) and server-side (logic and data Tiers) programming under a single model. We base our approach on a W3C-standardized client-side markup language, XForms, and its server-side extension proposed in this paper. We derive the extension requirements from the literature and use cases, and demonstrate their functionality on the example of a blog Web application. We also show how the extension can be implemented as part of a comprehensive Web application framework called XFormsDB. The XFormsDB framework is an extensible Web application framework built upon declarative W3C standards. It has four major advantages: (1) one programming language, (2) one data model, (3) based on W3C-standardized declarative markup, and (4) extensibility in all Tiers. Our conclusion is that expanding the Presentation Tier to cover both application logic and data management functionality makes both the development and maintenance of small- and medium-sized Web applications easier.

SAC - Extending XForms with server-side functionality

In this paper, we introduce a framework that allows users---namely, Web designers---to implement entire Web applications using only markup languages. In addition, all application development is performed on the client side, simplifying both development and maintenance work. The proposed framework is based on the XForms markup language and its server-side extension proposed in this paper. We derive the extension requirements from the literature and depict its function using a simple Web-based blog application. We also show how the extension can be implemented as part of a comprehensive Web application development framework called XFormsDB. Our conclusion is that expanding the Presentation Tier to define both application logic and data management functionality makes both the development and maintenance of small- and medium-sized Web applications easier.
