    Abstract:

    The real exchange rate (REX) has long been used as the proxy for Prices in tourism demand models. However it has limitations, particularly when it comes to models of outbound tourism. As an alternative, a Price competitiveness index (PCI) is developed and used as a proxy for Prices in a model of outbound tourism from Australia. Results obtained show that while REX is statistically insignificant and yields a Price elasticity of −0.002, PCI is significant and generates a Price elasticity of −1.07. The results obtained show that PCI outperforms REX as the preferred Price Variable in modelling outbound demand on both theoretic and empirical grounds. Furthermore, this index can be used to monitor the inter-temporal competitiveness of a destination.

    Environmental issues are receiving significant attention from the public, accelerating the development of green supply chain in operations management. This study focuses on the green supply chain performance in a single manufacturer-retailer setup, in which the manufacturer determines energy efficiency level and wholesale Price, while the retailer decides on sales Price. The unit production cost is jointly affected by cost learning and operational inefficiency effects. Open-loop, feedback and myopic equilibria are subsequently derived, and the corresponding supply chain performance and profit distribution are analyzed. The main results show that forward-looking behavior is preferred to myopic one for channel members. Feedback equilibrium is beneficial to the manufacturer, but is harmful to the retailer. The supply chain efficiencies in forward-looking and myopic situations are lower than the static supply chain efficiency, which results from cost learning and operational inefficiency effects, as well as non-Price Variable. The manufacturer and the retailer extract more profits under certain conditions, i.e., high cost learning effect, large energy efficiency effectiveness, low operational inefficiency effect or discount rate. However, the corresponding supply chain efficiencies decrease, and the manufacturer's profit proportions are less than 2/3. Investigation of supply chain performance with competition from multiple retailers implies that the effects of system parameters on supply chain performance keep the same directions of single manufacturer-retailer setup, while competition improves supply chain efficiency and manufacturer's profit proportion. This work contributes in involving cost learning and operational inefficiency effects simultaneously in a dynamic environment to explore supply chain performance.

    BackgroundHealthier dietary patterns are generally more costly than less healthy patterns, but dietary costs may be more important for dietary quality in lower educated and ethnic minority groups. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dietary costs and dietary quality and interactions with ethnicity and socioeconomic position (SEP).MethodsWe used cross-sectional data from 4717 Dutch, Surinamese, Turkish and Moroccan origin participants of the multi-ethnic HELIUS study (the Netherlands), who completed an ethnic-specific food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The primary outcome measure was dietary quality according to adherence to the Dutch Healthy Diet index 2015 (DHD15-index, range 0–130). Individual dietary costs (the monetary value attached to consumed diets in Euros) were estimated by merging a food Price Variable with the FFQ nutrient composition database. Regression analyses were used to examine main and interaction effects. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, smoking, energy intake, physical activity, ethnicity and educational level.ResultsHaving higher dietary costs was associated with higher dietary quality. Analyses stratified by educational level showed that associations were stronger in higher educated (Btertile3 = 8.06, 95%CI = 5.63; 10.48) than in lower educated participants (Btertile3 = 5.09, 95%CI = 2.74; 7.44). Stratification by ethnic origin showed strongest associations in Turkish participants (Btertile2 = 9.31, 95%CI = 5.96; 12.65) and weakest associations in Moroccan participants (Btertile3 = 4.29, 95%CI = 0.58; 8.01). Regardless of their level of education, Turkish and Moroccan individuals consumed higher quality diets at the lowest cost than Dutch participants.ConclusionsThe importance of dietary costs for dietary quality differs between socioeconomic and ethnic subgroups. Increasing individual food budgets or decreasing food Prices may be effective for the promotion of healthy diets, but differential effects across socioeconomic and ethnic subgroups may be expected.

  • Who Visits a National Park and What do They Get Out of It?: A Joint Visitor Cluster Analysis and Travel Cost Model for Yellowstone National Park

    Yellowstone National Park visitor data were obtained from a survey collected for the National Park Service by the Park Studies Unit at the University of Idaho. Travel cost models have been conducted for national parks in the United States; however, this study builds on these studies and investigates how benefits vary by types of visitors who participate in different activities while at the park. Visitor clusters were developed based on activities in which a visitor participated while at the park. The clusters were analyzed and then incorporated into a travel cost model to determine the economic value (consumer surplus) that the different visitor groups received from visiting the park. The model was estimated using a zero-truncated negative binomial regression corrected for endogenous stratification. The travel cost Price Variable was estimated using both 1/3 and 1/4 the wage rate to test for sensitivity to opportunity cost specification. The average benefit across all visitor cluster groups was estimated at between $235 and $276 per person per trip. However, per trip benefits varied substantially across clusters; from $90 to $103 for the “value picnickers,” to $185–$263 for the “backcountry enthusiasts,” $189–$278 for the “do it all adventurists,” $204–$303 for the “windshield tourists,” and $323–$714 for the “creature comfort” cluster group.
