ICALT - Collaborative virtual environment technology for people with autism
Fifth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT'05), 2005Co-Authors: Yufang Cheng, David Moore, Paul Mcgrath, Yulei FanAbstract:This paper focuses on an investigation of collaborative virtual environment (CVE) technology for people with autism, paying particular attention to the use of avatar representations of emotions. A Prima Facie Case for a CVE technological approach is developed, which argues that CVE offers great potential benefits for people with autism. An empirical study of people with autism using a simulated CVE system has been carried out. Results suggest that, on the whole, the participants were able to recognise and operate the avatar representations when communicating via the CVE system.

Computational Uses of PhilosophicalDialogue Theories
Informal Logic, 1996Co-Authors: David Moore, Dave HobbesAbstract:The research discussed in this paper concerns an investigation of logical dialogue games as a vehicle for enhanced human-computer communication. The need for a dialogue capability in computer systems is argued, and a Prima Facie Case made for dialogue games, in particular Mackenzie's "DC", as a suitable dialogue model. Empirical work concerning DC is outlined, and strategies for adoption by the computer are presented. A user interface, software architecture and conceptualised example are discussed. The hope is that the paper will help bring together two groups of workers-philosophers of dialogue and designers of computer systems-to the mutual benefit of each.
