BRIEF REPORT Testing for a Historical Population Bottleneck in Wild Verreaux's Sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi verreauxi ) Using Microsatellite Data

At present, most evidence addressing this issue comes from archaeology, paleontology, and behavioral studies. Genetic data provide another source of evidence. In this study, six microsatellite loci, genotyped on more than 360 wild Verreaux's sifaka, are used in order to test the hypothesis that this population experienced a population bottleneck in the last 2000 years. Excess heterozygosity is compared with the heterozygosity expected under mutation-drift equilibrium in order to test for the genetic signature of a rapid population contraction in the past. The results indicate that the sifaka population did not experience a population bottleneck. Various methodological and conceptual implications of this result are discussed. Am

American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 2008Co-Authors: Melinda L Carter, Richard W Wrangham, Herman Pontzer, Julian Kerbis C PeterhansAbstract:The ecological pressures shaping chimpanzee anatomy and behavior are the subject of much discussion in Primatology and paleoanthropology, yet empirical data on fundamental parameters including body size, morbidity, and mortality are rare for wild chimpanzees. Here, we present skeletal pathology and body size data for 20 (19 crania, 12 postcrania) chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) from Kibale National Park, Uganda. We compare these data with other East African populations, especially Gombe National Park. Estimated body size for Kibale chimpanzees was similar to other East African populations and significantly larger than Gombe chimpanzees. The high rates of trauma and other skeletal pathology evident in the Kibale chimpanzee skeletons were similar to those in the Gombe skeletal sample. Much of the major skeletal trauma in the Kibale skeletons was attributable to falls, although other pathologies were noted as well, including apparent injuries from snares, degenerative arthritis, and minor congenital abnormalities. Presence and species identification of the gapeworm Mammomonogamus laryngeus (Railliet, 1899) (Syngamidae: Nematoda) in a semi-wild population of Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) in Indonesia.

Syngame laryngieu du boeuf. Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Seances et Memoires de la Societe de Biologie 11, 18-21]. This finding confirmed previous record of ova and adult syngamid nematodes, determined by Collet et al. [Collet, J.-Z., Galdikas, B.M.F., Sugarjito, J., Jojosudharmo, S., 1986. A coprological study of parasitism in orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) in Indonesia. Journal of Medical Primatology 15, 121-129] as Mammomonogamus sp. only, in orangutans kept in the Bohorok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (Northern Sumatra, Indonesia) and presented a serious health hazard to rehabilitants in this locality. Morphometrical features and the first description of the parasite from orang-utan were presented and documented. Coprological monitoring of infection in rehabilitants in this area as well as among the wild population of orangutan is necessary.

At the same time, some primate sites are working to exclude or severely restrict tourism because of problems that have developed as a result. Indeed, tourism has proven costly to primates due to factors such as disease, stress, social disruption, vulnerability to poachers, and interference with rehabilitation and reintroduction. Bringing together interdisciplinary expertise in wildlife/nature tourism and Primatology, experts present and discuss their accumulated experience from individual primate sites open to tourists, formal studies of primate-focused tourism, and trends in nature and wildlife tourism. Chapters offer species- and site-specific assessments, weighing conservation benefits against costs, and suggesting strategies for the development of informed guidelines for ongoing and future primate tourism ventures. Primate Tourism has been written for primatologists, conservationists and other scientists. It is also relevant to tourists and tourism professionals.

Our goal was to understand from a comparative international perspective the contexts of genesis and development of physical/biological anthropology around the world. While biological anthropology today can encompass paleoanthropology, Primatology, and skeletal biology, our symposium focused on the field’s engagement with living human populations. Bringing together scholars in the history of science, science studies, and anthropology, the participants examined the discipline’s past in different contexts but also reflected on its contemporary and future conditions. Our contributors explore national histories, collections, and scientific field practice with the goal of developing a broader understanding of the discipline’s history.
