    Abstract:

    Online crowdfunding has received a great deal of attention as a promising avenue to fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. Because online settings bring increased visibility and traceability of transactions, many crowdfunding platforms provide mechanisms that enable a campaign contributor to conceal his or her identity or contribution amount from peers. We study the impact of these information (Privacy) Control mechanisms on crowdfunder behavior. Employing a randomized experiment at one of the world’s largest online crowdfunding platforms, we find evidence of both positive (e.g., comfort) and negative (e.g., Privacy priming) causal effects. We find that reducing access to information Controls induces a net increase in fund-raising, yet this outcome results from two competing influences—treatment increases willingness to engage with the platform (a 4.9% increase in the probability of contribution) and simultaneously decreases the average contribution (a $5.81 decline). This decline derives from a publicity effect, wherein contributors respond to a lack of Privacy by tempering extreme contributions. We unravel the causal mechanisms that drive the results and discuss the implications of our findings for the design of online platforms.

A notable aspect of this shift from an offline to an online setting is that it brings increased visibility and traceability of transactions. Many crowdfunding platforms therefore provide mechanisms that enable a campaign contributor to conceal his or her identity or contribution amount from peers. We study the impact of these information (Privacy) Control mechanisms on crowdfunder behavior.     Abstract:

    Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become one of the major platforms for social interactions, such as building up relationship, sharing personal experiences, and providing other services. The wide adoption of OSNs raises Privacy concerns due to personal data shared online. Privacy Control mechanisms have been deployed in popular OSNs for users to determine who can view their personal information. However, user's sensitive information could still be leaked even when Privacy rules are properly configured. We investigate the effectiveness of Privacy Control mechanisms against Privacy leakage from the perspective of information flow. Our analysis reveals that the existing Privacy Control mechanisms do not protect the flow of personal information effectively. By examining representative OSNs including Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, we discover a series of Privacy exploits. We find that most of these exploits are inherent due to the conflicts between Privacy Control and OSN functionalities. The conflicts reveal that the effectiveness of Privacy Control may not be guaranteed as most OSN users expect. We provide remedies for OSN users to mitigate the risk of involuntary information leakage in OSNs. Finally, we discuss the costs and implications of resolving the Privacy exploits.

    Personal Voice Assistants (PVAs) such as the Siri, Amazon Echo and Google Home are now commonplace. PVAs continuously monitor conversations which may be transported to a cloud back end where they are stored, processed and maybe even passed on to other service providers. A user has little Controlover this process. She is unable to Control the recording behaviour of surrounding PVAs, unable to signal her Privacy requirements to back-end systems and unable to track conversation recordings.In this paper we explore techniques for embedding additional information into acoustic signals processed by PVAs. A user employs a tagging device which emits an acoustic signal whenPVA activity is assumed. Any active PVA will embed this tag into their recorded audio stream. The tag may signal a cooperatingPVA or back-end system that a user has not given a recording consent. The tag may also be used to trace when and wherea recording was taken. We discuss different tagging techniques and application scenarios, and we describe the implementation of a prototype tagging device based on PocketSphinx. Using the popular PVA Google Home Mini we demonstrate that the device can tag conversations and that the tagging signal can be retrieved from conversations stored in the Google back-end system

    Smart assistant devices (such as Amazon Echo or Google Home) have notable differences to more conventional consumer computing devices. They can be used through voice Control as well as physical interaction, and are often positioned as a shared device within a home environment. We conduct an exploratory online survey with 97 UK-based users of smart assistant devices, to examine the differences users perceive between smart assistants and more familiar devices (such as smartphones and computers), in terms of shared use dynamics, Privacy-related behaviours, and Privacy concerns. The survey explores typical usage, setup practices, perceived ease of use and Control, Privacy concerns for multiple users, shared usage of existing devices, and smart assistant Privacy Control usage. Approximately half of participants were unsure of where to access Privacy settings on their smart home assistants; basic device Controls and informal Privacy Controls saw general use. Those who had used Privacy Controls with previous devices used at least one smart assistant Privacy Control.
