  • Romantic partners’ working memory capacity facilitates relationship Problem Resolution through recollection of Problem-relevant information.
Journal of experimental psychology. General, 2019
Co-Authors: Levi R. Baker, Michael J. Kane, V. Michelle Russell
    Abstract:

Intimates often discuss the causes of, and solutions to, their relationship Problems with their partners, and this information can shape partners' behavior and thus facilitate Problem Resolution. Partners' ability to encode and later recall such discussions should lead to greater declines in the severity of those Problems. This brief report presents the results from a broader longitudinal study in which newlywed couples completed tasks assessing their working memory capacity (WMC), engaged in Problem-solving discussions, recalled those discussions after a short delay, and then reported the severity of the Problems discussed over the course of a year. Greater WMC among partners was associated with greater declines in the severity of a relationship Problem, mediated by partners' recall of the discussion of that Problem, suggesting that WMC facilitated the long-term memory encoding of the Problem discussion. This study is among the first to suggest that individual differences in basic cognitive abilities may affect conversation processing and recall, and thereby close relationships. • EasyTicket: a ticket routing recommendation engine for enterprise Problem Resolution
    Proc. VLDB Endow., 2008
Co-Authors: Qihong Shao, Shu Tao, Xifeng Yan, Yi Chen, Nikos Anerousis
    Abstract:

Managing Problem tickets is a key issue in IT service industry. A large service provider may handle thousands of Problem tickets from its customers on a daily basis. The efficiency of processing these tickets highly depends on ticket routing---transferring Problem tickets among expert groups in search of the right resolver to the ticket. Despite that many ticket management systems are available, ticket routing in these systems is still manually operated by support personnel. In this demo, we introduce EasyTicket, a ticket routing recommendation engine that helps automate this process. By mining ticket history data, we model an enterprise social network that represents the functional relationships among various expert groups in ticket routing. Based on this network, our system then provides routing recommendations to new tickets. Our experimental studies on 1.4 million real-world Problem tickets show that on average, EasyTicket can improve the efficiency of ticket routing by 35%.

  • Is it better to be both nice and nasty? Investigating the co-occurrence of sales manager aggressiveness and caring
    Journal of Business Research, 2017
Co-Authors: Milena Micevski, Selma Kadic-maglajlic, Sourindra Banerjee, John W. Cadogan, Nick Lee
    Abstract:

Empirical research has largely neglected to investigate the issue of sales manager's Problem Resolution styles in handling conflicts. Building on the qualitative work of Lee and Cadogan (2009), we investigate how sales manager's Problem Resolution styles, as reflected in both caring and aggressive interpersonal interactions with their salespeople, impact important sales force outcomes. The results show that depending on the level of caring that manager exhibits during the Problem Resolution process, the curvilinear effects of aggressiveness on salespeople emotional exhaustion and sportsmanship are dramatically altered. Our findings are interesting, and suggest that the almost wholly negative picture painted in current academic literature regarding aggressive managerial style is at least somewhat simplistic, and perhaps rather overstated. Therefore aggressiveness and caring further should be considered together, rather than separately.

  • Sales manager Problem Resolution styles:measure development and an examination of their salesperson-related consequences
    2003
    Co-Authors: Nick Lee
    Abstract:

Personal selling and sales management play a critical role in the short and long term success of the firm, and have thus received substantial academic interest since the 1970s. Sales research has examined the role of the sales manager in some depth, defining a number of key technical and interpersonal roles which sales managers have in influencing sales force effectiveness. However, one aspect of sales management which appears to remain unexplored is that of their Resolution of salesperson-related Problems. This study represents the first attempt to address this gap by reporting on the conceptual and empirical development of an instrument designed to measure sales managers' Problem Resolution styles. A comprehensive literature review and qualitative research study identified three key constructs relating to sales managers' Problem Resolution styles. The three constructs identified were termed; sales manager willingness to respond, sales manager caring, and sales manager aggressiveness. Building on this, existing literature was used to develop a conceptual model of salesperson-specific consequences of the three Problem Resolution style constructs. The quantitative phase of the study consisted of a mail survey of UK salespeople, achieving a total sample of 140 fully usable responses. Rigorous statistical assessment of the sales manager Problem Resolution style measures was undertaken, and construct validity examined. Following this, the conceptual model was tested using latent variable path analysis. The results for the model were encouraging overall, and also with regard to the individual hypotheses. Sales manager Problem Resolution styles were found individually to have significant impacts on the salesperson-specific variables of role ambiguity, emotional exhaustion, job satisfaction, organisational commitment and organisational citizenship behaviours. The findings, theoretical and managerial implications, limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

  • Problem Resolution process for software porting project- a case study
    Databases and Information Systems, 2001
    Co-Authors: Janis Plume, Juris Strods
    Abstract:

This article contains summary of experience and lessons learned during a software porting project. The main goal of the project is to move a product from 16 bit Windows 95 platform to the 32 bit Windows NT. Problem Resolution process is taken as the central for this project and it gives the context for all activities performed in the project. Some product and process measures are gathered from the project and analysed to show the main characteristics of the project in general and Problem Resolution process in particular.
