Portfolio assessment: direct from the classroom

This study reports on student real‐life experiences with Portfolio assessment. The focus group comprised 150 freshmen (100 females) from a small campus of a tertiary educational institution. For two semesters (approximately 30 weeks), students engaged in numerous activities selected to encourage deep learning and understanding of mathematical concepts. Because students were not involved in the experiment, ecological validity was maximised, and observations may be regarded as fairly authentic and worthy of analysis. Generally, students reported learning much from Portfolio assessment and felt an integral part of the assessment Process. Portfolio assessment appeared to empower students and provide them with the self‐respect they desired. Future research could compare results from everyday observations with those from experiments.

MethodsX, 2019Co-Authors: Michel Ferreira Cardia HaddadAbstract:Abstract Aiming at supporting the Process of investment Portfolio diversification by using a data-driven approach, the present methodological paper proposes a new cluster analysis, which compares publicly traded companies, mainly in times of high volatility (e.g. crisis times). The main goal of the proposed method is to provide a less arbitrary analysis to support financial investors to precisely measure the degree of similarity between equity stocks, unveiling equity market clustering patterns by applying analytic geometry solutions and calculating an overall clustering pattern indicator. Empirical results on synthetic data demonstrate either that the proposed method has conceptual superiority over traditional cluster analyses and its potential practical usefulness to asset allocation, Portfolio strategy, asset pricing, among other related purposes. Finally, the outputs of the proposed cluster analysis are presented through an intuitive and easily understandable mathematical visualization. • It is proposed a new method to calculate risk-similarity and clustering patterns. • The method unveils clustering patterns through a data-driven Process. • Portfolio diversification can benefit from sphere-sphere intersection calculations.

Revising an Engineering Design Rubric: A Case Study Illustrating Principles and Practices to Ensure Technical Quality of Rubrics
Practical Assessment Research and Evaluation, 2014Co-Authors: Gail Lynn GoldbergAbstract:This article provides a detailed account of a rubric revision Process to address seven common problems to which rubrics are prone: lack of consistency and parallelism; the presence of “orphan” and “widow” words and phrases; redundancy in descriptors; inconsistency in the focus of qualifiers; limited routes to partial credit; unevenness in incremental levels of performance; and inconsistencies across suites or sets of related rubrics. The author uses examples from both the draft stage precursor and the first revised (pilot) version of the Engineering Design Process Portfolio Scoring Rubric (EDPPSR), to illustrate the application of broadly relevant guidelines that can inform the creation of a new—or revision of an existing—rubric to achieve technical quality while preserving content integrity.

Abts, Gail Lynn GoldbergAbstract:James Groves is an Associate Professor of Engineering and Society and Associate Dean for Online Innovation in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. Dr. Groves earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from Duke University, where he also completed the requirements for the bachelor’s degree in political science. He has earned Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees from UVA. All of his earned degrees are in engineering. In 2000, Dr. Groves co-founded Directed Vapor Technologies International (www.directedvapor.com), based upon his Ph.D. research and four U.S. patents derived from that research. Since 2002 James has been the director of distance learning in UVA’s engineering school, a responsibility that includes administration of the school’s participation in the master’s level Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program and the bachelor’s level Engineers PRODUCED in Virginia initiative.

Chemical production Process Portfolio optimization

Al-mohannadi, Patrick LinkeAbstract:Abstract The Net Present Value (NPV) is typically employed as the profitability criterion to determine investment decisions in chemical plants. Such an evaluation is performed on a plant by plant basis and does not consider the Portfolio nature of the chemical Process industry in that a company typically owns multiple plants to produce diverse sets of chemicals. Portfolio optimization, which is employed in other fields to guide investment decisions, has not been applied in the chemical engineering domain. To close the gap, this work introduces the optimization of Process Portfolios based on Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT). The customization of the MPT method to the chemical plant investment problem is presented. The application of the method is then illustrated with a case study considering six plants. Identified MPT Portfolios are compared against Portfolios constructed based on two commonly used profitability criteria, i.e. Net Present Value and Return on Investment (ROI). The effects of annual and monthly profit variabilities and of economies of scale on Portfolio selection are also explored. The results indicate that Portfolios developed with the proposed MPT methodology can outperform those Portfolios selected based on NPV and ROI.
