  • Export Instability and Economic Growth in Nigeria: A Time Series Analysis
    2017
    Co-Authors: Olajide S. Oladipo
    Abstract:

Primary Products and Commodities are sources of raw material, and provide food and livelihood for many families and communities. They also provide export earnings and income for many governments in developing countries. In Nigeria, and other sub-Saharan Africa countries, primary Products and Commodities are at the heart of local economies and sometimes national economies. However, over the years, prices of primary Products and Commodities have been very volatile, with serious implications for economic growth. As a response, this study investigates the impact of export instability on economic growth in Nigeria using time series data from 1970q1 to 2011q4 and an econometric approach that addresses the problem of non-stationarity. As a departure from previous studies, the paper uses an instability measure that varies over time and a relatively large data sample size. Our results show that export instability has negative effects on economic growth and investment. The policy recommendation is that to smoothen Nigeria’s financial standing in the short run, the government should ensure the national sovereign wealth fund (NSWF) is properly managed given the unpredictability of the global export market. A long term strategy is the continuation and intensification of government efforts to diversify the export base of the country. The export sub-sector should be diversified by increasing the share of non-traditional exports.

    Abstract:

  • Will Fair Trade Coffee Stunt Your (Economic) Growth? A Response to Paul Myers
The Journal of Markets and Morality, 2013
    Co-Authors: Victor V. Claar
    Abstract:

Today fair trade follows two approaches. One approach, pioneered a halfcentury ago by organizations such as Ten Thousand Villages, works with artisans to share their unique handiwork with potential buyers with whom they otherwise would not connect. Laura Raynolds and Douglas Murray refer to this as the alternative-trade-organization approach (ATO). The second approach—currently surging in popularity—does not involve uncommon goods. This newer approach focuses instead on a large and growing array of Products and Commodities that are relatively common in both quantity and quality, such as coffee, tea, rice, honey, bananas, and soccer balls—to name a mere few. Trade in these goods is controlled worldwide by an umbrella organization called the Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO).

  • assessing the main opportunities of integrated biorefining from agro bioenergy co by Products and agroindustrial residues into high value added Products associated to some emerging markets a review
Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2018
Co-Authors: Ugo De Corato, Isabella De Bari, Egidio Viola, Massimo Pugliese
    Abstract:

Abstract Market implementation of integrated biorefinery requires reliable and advanced processing units combined with eco-friendly and economically profitable production chains. Future developments of integrated biorefinery systems should include either crop cultivation with selected genotypes that maximize full chain performances either the increasing use of disposable or/and underused biomass. The aim of this paper was to review the main biorefining opportunities related to agro-bioenergy co-Products and agroindustrial residues potentially available on the World (as biofuel co/by-Products, agricultural residues, agricultural by-Products and agro-wastes), paying a special attention to high-value added Products associated to some emerging markets. The current status and future perspectives of conversion from agro-bioenergy residual biomass into high-value bio-based Products by innovative biorefineries have been considered. After a brief recognition on the nature and origin of the main categories of organic residuals derived from the biofuel chains and agricultural, forestry, food processing and animal activities within definitions given by the European Union, this paper has firstly focused its choice on the high-value added Products associated to some chemical basic-platforms (succinic acid, cellulose, glycerin, proteins, peptides, enzymes, etc.). A special attention has also been done to high-value added bio-based Products and Commodities related to sustainable and renewable farming systems (soil amendment, phytosanitary drug, plant biostimulant and biofertilizer) and bio-based industries in producing innovative biomaterials (bioplastic, lignin and alginate). Finally, this paper has addressed own concern on the perspectives of integrated biorefining from organic residuals drawing particular attention to the European and Italian contexts giving and discussing some new opportunities for big players and stakeholders.

  • Ethnic Cultural Tourism Development and the Existence of Ethnic Cultures
    Journal of Kaili University, 2014
    Co-Authors: Yang Dong-shen
    Abstract:

The development of ethnic cultural tourism is the process of transformation of Products and Commodities from ethnic cultures. This process involves the processing and reconstruction of ethnic cultures, which influences the foundations of ethnic cultures. We should realize the positive interaction between the protection of ethnic culture development to ensure the existence, inheritance and development of ethnic cultures.
