    Abstract:

    Aim To describe the organizational structure and resources for strategic mediacommunication of nursing Professional Associations and trade unions in Portugal. Design and methods Quantitative study, with a cross-sectional, exploratory/descriptive design. From October to November 2017, a questionnaire was sent to 21 nursing Professional Associations and trade unions in Portugal. Eleven (52.4%) organizations replied: nine Professional Associations and two trade unions. Results The participating organizations rely on basic structures regarding strategic communication: 54.5% of them have less than 500 members; 63.6% of them have no communication budget; 54.5% of them have no formal communication structure, and only 27.3% of them hold events for the purpose of media coverage. Consequently, most of these organizations have occasional interactions with journalists, create messages about nursing problems, and directed mostly to nurses, perpetuating a circular communication. Conclusion Nursing Professional organizations have limited resources and lack of formal communication structures. The restricted interaction with the media and the "echoing" voice that propagates within the profession may hinder citizens' full understanding of its contribution. Nursing organizations must develop a nation-wide strategy that promotes transversal collaboration and resources optimization, with the purpose of increasing their media visibility and strengthening their Public Health mission.

    Abstract:

    This article presents an integrative literature review to identify and assess how regulatory bodies, Professional Associations, and trade union organizations differ and interact. A small number of studies, from across a diverse range of disciplines, have researched this topic. Nine studies were analyzed, resulting in the identification of 16 themes and their associated characteristics. Although these three organizational types may share some overarching ambitions, the perspectives taken in achieving these ambitions are often different, as is the ultimate or primary beneficiary of the actions. Further research is needed to validate these findings and to explore which of the various themes have the greatest impact on achieving organizational goals and avoiding tensions, conflict, and bias.

    Abstract:

    Women technical communicators helped to organize many of the first Professional Associations for technical communicators in the 1940s and 1950s. For some of these women, organizing was an occupational closure strategy of revolutionary usurpation: They may have hoped to position themselves favorably to shape a future profession that was not predicated on hidden forms of their inclusion. Exclusionary and demarcationary forces, however, seem to have ultimately undermined their efforts, alienating some of them and inducing others to adopt a strategy of inclusionary usurpation. In addition to using gender-sensitive revisions of occupational closure theory to explain the phenomenon of the woman organizer, the author chronicles the emergence of 8 Professional Associations for technical communicators and identifies the women technical communicators who helped to organize them.
