  • A personalized and integrative comparison-shopping engine and its applications
    Decision Support Systems, 2003
    Co-Authors: Soe-tsyr Yuan
    Abstract:

Agents are the catalysts for commerce on the Web today. For example, comparison-shopping agents mediate the interactions between consumers and suppliers in order to yield markets that are more efficient. However, today's shopping agents are price-dominated, unreflective of the nature of supplier/consumer differentiation or the changing course of differentiation over time. This paper aims to tackle this dilemma and advances shopping agents into a stage where both kinds of differentiation are taken into account for enhanced understanding of the realities. We call them personalized and integrative shopping agents. These agents can leverage the interactive power of the Web for a more accurate understanding of consumer's preferences. This paper then presents a comparison-shopping engine that can be easily instantiated to become personalized and integrative shopping agents. This engine comprises of a product/merchant information collector, a consumer behavior extractor, a user Profile Manager, and an on-line learning personalized ranking module. We have built this engine and instantiated a comparison-shopping system for collecting preliminary evaluation results. The results show that this system is quite promising in overcoming the reality challenges of comparison shopping. In order to strengthen the contributions of this engine, we also gave a fielded application of this engine for personalized travel information discovery and explained the great potentials of this engine for a variety of comparison-shopping tasks.

  • Next-generation agent-enabled comparison shopping
    Expert Systems with Applications, 2000
    Co-Authors: Soe-tsyr Yuan, A Liu
    Abstract:

Abstract Agents are the catalysts for commerce on the Web today. For example, comparison-shopping agents mediate the interactions between buyers and sellers in order to yield more efficient markets. However, today's shopping agents are price-dominated, unreflective of the nature of seller/buyer differentiation or the changing course of differentiation over time. This paper aims to tackle this dilemma and advances shopping agents into a stage where both kinds of differentiation are taken into account for enhanced understanding of the realities. We call them next-generation shopping agents. These agents can leverage the interactive power of the Web for more accurate understanding of buyer's preferences. This paper then presents an architecture of the next-generation shopping agents. This architecture is composed of a Product/Merchant Information Collector, a Buyer Behavior Extractor, a User Profile Manager and an Online Learning Personalized-Ranking Module. We have implemented a system following the core of the architecture and collected preliminary evaluation results. The results show this system is quite promising in overcoming the reality challenges of comparison shopping.

  • Privacy-enhancing features of identidroid
    2015
Co-Authors: Daniele Midi, Oyindamola Oluwatimi, Bilal Shebaro, Elisa Bertino
    Abstract:

As privacy today is a major concern for mobile systems, network anonymizers are widely available on smartphones systems, such as Android. However, in many cases applications are still able to identify the user and the device by means different from the IP address. Our work provides two solutions that address this problem by providing application-level anonymity. The first solution shadows sensitive data that can reveal the user identity. The second solutions dynamically revokes Android application permissions associated with sensitive information at run-time. In addition, both solutions offer protection from applications that identify their users through traces left in the application's data storage or by exchanging identifying data messages. We developed IdentiDroid, a customized Android operating system, to deploy these solutions, and built IdentiDroid Profile Manager, a Profile-based configuration tool for setting different configurations for each installed Android application.

  • Cloudet: A Cloud-Driven Visual Cognition of Large Streaming Data
International Journal of Cognitive Informatics and Natural Intelligence, 2016
Co-Authors: George Baciu, Yunzhe Wang, Xiujun Zhang
    Abstract:

Streaming data cognition has become a dominant problem in interactive visual analytics for event detection, meteorology, cosmology, security, and smart city applications. In order to interact with streaming data patterns in an elastic cloud environment, we present a new elastic framework for big data visual analytics in the cloud, the Cloudet. The Cloudet is a self-adaptive cloud-based platform that treats both data and compute nodes as elastic objects. The main objective is to readily achieve the scalability and elasticity of cloud computing platforms in order to process large streaming data and adapt to potential interactions between data stream features. Our main contributions include a robust cloud-based framework called the Cloudet. This is a cloud Profile Manager that attempts to optimize resource parameters in order to achieve expressivity, scalability, reliability, and the proper aggregation of the compute nodes and data streams into several density maps for the purpose of dynamic visualization.

  • ICCI*CC - Cloudets: Cloud-based cognition for large streaming data
2015 IEEE 14th International Conference on Cognitive Informatics & Cognitive Computing (ICCI*CC), 2015
Co-Authors: George Baciu, Yunzhe Wang, Xiujun Zhang
    Abstract:

Big data cognition has become a dominant problem in interactive visual analytics for event detection and response, metereology, cosmology, and large smart city applications including traffic monitoring and management, search and rescue operations, crowd management and logistics. The main problems are mainly due to big data volume and velocity and, in some cases, variety in both dimension and type. A practical approach to understanding and viewing big data features is through streaming operations. Streaming allows for both volume and velocity characteristics of big data, and often, for variety as well. However, performing analytics at interactive rates is currently an open challenge in most big data applications. Cloud computing platforms provide practical support and leverage to solving some of the big data and visual analytics problems, especially when dealing with the volume and velocity characteristics of current data generation. Our main contributions include a robust cloud-based framework, the Cloudet, which can flexibly process the streaming data and applications to illustrate the setup and operations of this framework. The framework includes a cloud Profile Manager that attempts to optimize the cloudet parameters in order to achieve expressivity, scalability, reliability, and the proper aggregation of the data streams into several density maps for the purpose of dynamic visualization of data features.

  • Online multiple Profile Manager for eHealth information sharing
2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), 2012
    Co-Authors: Jian Liang, Tony Sahama
    Abstract:

Online social networks connect millions of people around the globe. These electronic bonds make individuals comfortable with their behaviours. Such positive signs of sharing information is useful phenomena requires consideration to establish a socio-scientific effect. Recently, many Web users have more than one social networking account. This means a user may hold multiple Profiles which are stored in different Social Network Sites (SNSs). Maintaining these multiple online social network Profiles is cumbersome and time-consuming [1]. In this paper we will propose a framework for the management of a user's multiple Profiles. A demonstrator, called Multiple Profile Manager (MPM), will be showcased to illustrate how effective the framework will be.

  • HIC - Synchronised integrated online e-health Profiles.
Studies in health technology and informatics, 2011
Co-Authors: Jian Liang, Renato Iannella, Tony Sahama
    Abstract:

Web-based social networking applications have become increasingly important in recent years. The current applications in the healthcare sphere can support the health management, but to date there is no patient-controlled integrator. This paper proposes a platform called Multiple Profile Manager (MPM) that enables a user to create and manage an integrated Profile that can be shared across numerous social network sites. Moreover, it is able to facilitate the collection of personal healthcare data, which makes a contribution to the development of public health informatics. Here we want to illustrate how patients and physicians can be benefited from enabling the platform for online social network sites. The MPM simplifies the management of patients' Profiles and allows health professionals to obtain a more complete picture of the patients' background so that they can provide better health care. To do so, we demonstrate a prototype of the platform and describe its protocol specification, which is an XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) [1] extension, for sharing and synchronising Profile data (vCard²) between different social networks.
