predictive factors of nipple involvement in breast cancer a systematic review and meta analysis
Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, 2015Co-Authors: Hanwen Zhang, Meena S Moran, Bruce G Haffty, Qifeng YangAbstract:Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) provides a cosmetic and Psychological Benefit for patients, but concerns on nipple involvement (NI) of tumor continue to persist. Several studies have reported factors for predicting NI, but the results were inconsistent and uncomprehensive, making patient selection difficult. The aim of the systematic review was to pool the published data to further discern factors associated with NI. A literature review was conducted of PubMed database, following the PRISMA guidelines. Relative risks (RRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random-effect or fix-effect model. Publication bias and Chi-square test were also calculated. From 1978 to 2014, 27 clinical studies with 7971 patients met the inclusion criteria. Predictive factors suggest higher rates of NI including the following: tumor-to-nipple distance (TND) ≤ 2.5 cm (3.65, 1.42–9.33); positive lymph node status (2.09, 1.71–2.57); stage III or IV disease (2.41, 1.93–3.00); tumor size > 5 cm (2.42, 1.95–3.02); estrogen receptor (ER)-negative status (1.19, 1.01–1.40); progesterone receptor (PR)-negative status (1.52, 1.25–1.84); HER-positive status (1.76, 1.46–2.12); patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) compared with invasive ductal carcinoma (1.55, 1.16–2.08). Due to the statistical heterogeneity detected with certain parameters, further investigations to confirm their association with NI will be needed. Patients with one or more risk factors such as centrally located tumors; higher tumor stage; large tumors; ER-negative/PR-negative/HER-positive status and associated DCIS have higher risk of NI. Taking these factors into consideration comprehensively may help with decision-making process for NSM.

mindfulness based stress reduction provides Psychological Benefit and restores immune function of women newly diagnosed with breast cancer a randomized trial with active control
Brain Behavior and Immunity, 2019Co-Authors: Linda Witek Janusek, Dina Tell, Herbert L MathewsAbstract:Abstract Background Women newly diagnosed with breast cancer experience Psychological distress, accompanied by reduced Natural Killer Cell Activity (NKCA) and altered levels of cytokines, which may compromise cancer control. Few studies have evaluated psycho-immune outcomes of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer in comparison to an active control condition. Objective The purpose of this study was to determine whether MBSR Benefits Psychological, behavioral, and immunological function in women recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Design After confirmation of breast cancer staging, women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer (n = 192) were randomized to an 8-week MBSR program or an 8-week active control condition (ACC). The ACC consisted of a series of cancer recovery and health education classes. Both MBSR and the ACC were administered in group format. Methods Women completed psychometric instruments and provided blood for NKCA and cytokine levels at pre-, mid-, and completion of program, as well as at 1- and 6-months post-program. One hundred and twenty four women completed all five-assessments (MBSR, n = 63; ACC, n = 61). Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyze trajectories of outcomes over time and between groups. Results Compared to the ACC group, women randomized to MBSR exhibited decreasing trajectories of perceived stress, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depressive symptoms. Further, compared to women randomized to ACC, MBSR women exhibited trajectories demonstrating significantly more rapid restoration of NKCA, accompanied by lower circulating TNF-alpha levels, lower IL-6 production, and greater IFN-gamma production. Conclusions These results demonstrate early provision of MBSR for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer provides not only Psychological Benefit, but also optimizes immune function supportive of cancer control.

consumer attitude and purchase intention toward green energy brands the roles of Psychological Benefits and environmental concern
Journal of Business Research, 2012Co-Authors: Patrick Hartmann, Vanessa ApaolazaibanezAbstract:Abstract This paper suggests that advertising campaigns directed at increasing consumer demand for green energy should emphasize not only environmental concern and utilitarian Benefits, but also Psychological brand Benefits. The theoretical framework proposes three distinct Psychological Benefit categories potentially enhancing consumer attitudes toward green energy brands and increasing purchase intentions: warm glow, self-expressive Benefits, and nature experiences. A sample of 726 consumers was exposed to experimental advertisements for a fictitious green energy brand. Findings confirm most predicted effects and underline the overall significance of Psychological brand Benefits. Only self-expressive Benefits do neither affect participants' attitudes toward the experimental brand nor their purchase intentions. Nature experience has the strongest influence on brand attitude. Multi-group structural analysis shows that the nature experiences level evoked by the advertisements moderates the effects of the behavioral antecedents studied on brand attitude and purchase intention. The findings provide keys to improving green energy branding and advertising strategy.
