on the affine structure of perceptual Space
Psychological Science, 2001Co-Authors: James T Todd, Augustinus H J Oomes, Jan J Koenderink, Astrid M L KappersAbstract:Affine geometry is a generalization of Euclidean geometry in which distance can be scaled along parallel directions, though relative distances in different directions may be incommensurable. This article presents a new procedure for testing the intrinsic affine structure of a Psychological Space by having subjects perform bisection judgments over multiple directions. If those judgments are internally consistent with one another, they must satisfy a theorem first proved by Pierre Varignon around 300 years ago. In the experiment reported here, this procedure was employed to measure the perceived structure of a visual ground surface. The results revealed that observers' judgments were systematically distorted relative to the physical environment, but that the judged bisections in different directions had an internally consistent affine structure. Implications of these findings for other possible response tasks are considered.

Subjective Well-Being in Early Adulthood and Psychological Distance to the Objects of the Socio-Psychological Space during COVID-19 Pandemic
Social Psychology and Society, 2021Co-Authors: S. V. Yaremtchuk, A. V. BakinaAbstract:Objective. Study of changes in the young people subjective well-being during the initial period of COVID-19 distribution and its relationship with the subjective distance to the objects of the socio-Psychological Space of the individual. Background. The COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the global challenges in 2020, creating obstacles to meeting the urgent needs of people. Young people aged 18—24 are one of the most vulnerable groups in terms of Psychological well-being, which makes it important to study their reactions during the pandemic. Study design. The study was conducted from April 14 to June 16, 2020 in the Khabarovsk region. Data was collected remotely. To identify changes during the pandemic, the sample data was compared with the results of a study, which had been conducted in February 2019. Participants. Sample 2019: 139 subjects (45 males and 94 females, aged 18—24, M=20). Sample 2020: 130 subjects (40 males and 90 females, aged 18—24, M=19.5). Measurements. The subjective well-being of young people was measured on a scale of global life satisfaction and subjective happiness. To study the Psychological distance of social contacts, a modified method of A.B. Kupreichenko was used. Results. The significant increase in life satisfaction among young people was registered. Under the pandemic conditions, increased satisfaction is associated with proximity to a wide range of social groups. Сonclusions. The subjective well-being in early adulthood during the pandemic is associated with focus on social contacts, which creates conditions for the effective use of internal and external resources.

Socio-Psychological Space of Young People with Different Levels of Subjective Well-Being
Proceeding of the International Science and Technology Conference "FarEastСon 2019", 2020Co-Authors: A. V. Bakina, S. V. Yaremtchuk, O. A. Orlova, Yu. V. KrasnoperovaAbstract:The article is devoted to the analysis of the results of the study of the socio-Psychological Space of young people with different subjective well-being levels. The study sample included 253 people aged 16–24 years, Komsomolsk-on-Amur residents (Russia). To study the socio-Psychological Space of young people, the technique of graphic representation of vital Psychological Space by G. V. Shukova was used. To study life satisfaction the scales of global life satisfaction and subjective level of happiness were used. According to the study, three contrast groups were formed: with low, middle and high levels of life satisfaction. Differences between different groups were determined with the help of Fisher φ*-criterion and Mann–Whitney U-test. The results of the study show that young people distinguish communicative, educational, professional and entertaining spheres of life in socio-Psychological Space. Semantic zones of socio-Psychological Space of young people include intangible and material values. Young people with a high level of subjective well-being, unlike other groups, indicate Employment in real-life Space much less. Young people with a high level of well-being point out the importance of stuffs in their real-life more often and that of Intangible Values less often than middle-level respondents. For young people with a high level of subjective well-being, compared with disadvantaged respondents, Friends is a more significant object of real socio-Psychological Space. In the ideal life Space, young people with a high level of subjective well-being indicate Intangible Values significantly less. Young people with an average level of life satisfaction attach greater importance to Self and Girlfriend/Boyfriend in the ideal life Space. Young people with a low level of subjective well-being attach importance to money in the Space of an ideal life less than the others.

The comparative psychophysics of complex shape perception.
Animal cognition, 2009Co-Authors: J. David Smith, Joshua S. Redford, Sarah M. HaasAbstract:The authors compared the complex shape perception of humans and monkeys. Members of both species participated in a Same-Different paradigm in which they judged the similarity of shape pairs that could be variations of the same underlying prototype. For both species, similarity gradients were found to be steep going out from the transformational center of Psychological Space. In contrast, similarity gradients were found to be flat going from the periphery in toward the center of Psychological Space. These results show that there are important common principles in the shape-perception and shape-comparison processes of humans and monkeys. The same general organization of Psychological Space is obtained. The same quantifiable metric of Psychological distance is applied. Established methods for creating controlled shape variation have the same effect on both species' similarity judgments. The member of the to-be-judged pair of shapes that is peripheral in Psychological Space controls the strength of the perceived similarity of the pair. The results have broader implications for the comparative study of perception and categorization.
