krafft ebing Psychopathia Sexualis and the creation of the medical notion of sadism
Revista Latinoamericana De Psicopatologia Fundamental, 2009Co-Authors: Mario Eduardo Costa PereiraAbstract:Richard Krafft-Ebing's Psychopathia Sexualis, written in the second half of the 19th century, can be considered part of the historical and cultural movement that brought in the medical gaze and authority as necessary references for determining the legitimacy of the various human sexual behaviors. Psychopathia Sexualis eventually became an authoritative reference in the forensic sphere. The book consists of a synthesis and extension of the studies on sexology of its time and introduced a delimitation of the field of sexual perversions through the use of a nomenclature that includes terms which eventually became widely established, such as sadism, masochism and fetishism. Its precision of classification became a central reference for all later studies in the field, including for Freud's work.

Male Anxieties: Nerve Force, Nation, and the Power of Sexual Knowledge
Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 2005Co-Authors: Sabine FrühstückAbstract:In the fall of 1929, a Kyōto-based journal for popular medicine reported that the dean of sexology, Habuto Eiji, had committed suicide after having long suffered from neurasthenia (shinkei suijaku).1 A practicing gynecologist, Habuto had been the editor of the sexological journal Seiyoku to Jinsei (Sexual Desire and Humankind), the author of numerous books on sexual issues, and the coauthor, together with Sawada Junjirō, of an abridged Japanese version of Richard von Krafft-Ebing’s Psychopathia Sexualis, entitled Hentai Seiyokuron (1915). He was also involved in the translation of Havelock Ellis’s Studies in the Psychology of Sex (1901–1928), the twenty Japanese-language volumes of which were advertised under the title Sei no Shinri (see figure 2.1) as early as 1927.

Male Anxieties: Nerve Force, Nation, and the Power of Sexual Knowledge
Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland, 2005Co-Authors: Sabine FrühstückAbstract:AbstractIn the autumn of 1929, a Kyôto-based journal for popular medicine reported that the dean of sexology, Habuto Eiji, had committed suicide after having suffered from neurasthenia (shinkei suijaku) for a long time. A practicing gynaecologist, Habuto had been the editor of the sexological journal Seiyoku to Jinsei (Sexual Desire and Humankind), the author of numerous books on sexual issues, and the co-author, together with Sawada Junjirô, of an abridged Japanese version of Richard von Krafft-Ebing's Psychopathia Sexualis, entitled Hentai Seiyokuron (1915). He also was involved in the translation of Havelock Ellis's Studies in the Psychology of Sex (1901–1928), the twenty Japanese-language volumes which were advertised under the title Sei no Shinri as early as in 1927. Among other sexologists, Habuto had been a chief theorist on the causes of neurasthenia. Physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, pedagogues, and sexologists agreed with him that neurasthenia primarily afflicted men and was caused by overpowering exhaustion that was in turn the result of certain sexual practices. Modern commentators like Habuto speculated that neurasthenia was the result of masturbation or – even worse – homosexuality.

richard von krafft ebing s Psychopathia Sexualis as sexual sourcebook for radclyffe hall s the well of loneliness
Critical Survey, 2003Co-Authors: Heike BauerAbstract:Psychopathia Sexualis (first published in German in 1886, in English in 1892) by the German sexologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840-1903) was amongst the first works in the new discipline to argue that homosexuality was part of nature and could thus not be condemned. Here the voices of real-life homosexuals were for the first time recorded, and these case studies led Krafft-Ebing to the belief that homosexuality was not an acquired vice. The idea of the 'naturalness' of homosexuality was at its time radical. Accordingly, the sexual knowledge was disseminated in a somewhat conspiratorial manner, as it was ostensibly directed solely at medical and legal practitioners 'to exclude the lay reader'.1 The work nevertheless gained publicity far beyond the specialist realm. I argue that this was partly due to the fact that Krafft-Ebing's medical book provided an exciting erotic stimulus. The real interest of many of its lay readers derived from its sexually explicit content, in other words Psychopathia Sexualis was a source for sexual kicks. This notion can be traced in Radclyffe Hall's classic lesbian novel The Well of Loneliness (1928), where it shines a new light on the construction of the novel's 'sexually inverted' protagonist. Many important studies of human sexuality have so far largely neglected the notion that Krafft-Ebing's work might have provided a source of sexual pleasure.2 Indeed criticism tended to ignore or dismiss Krafft-Ebing's key role in the promotion of homosexuality perse. Lillian Faderman, for example, recognized the fact that Krafft-Ebing had increasingly moved towards a more tolerant view of homosexuality, but she relegates this information to a footnote, claiming that the influence of his positive assessment of sexual inversion 'on popular notions of homosexuality was minimal'.3 Sheila Jeffreys even declared that due to what she identified as his own homophobia, Krafft-Ebing had invented the stereotype of the masculine lesbian and a 'phenomenon of female © CS 2003
