  • Crowdsourcing Human-Robot Interaction: New Methods and System Evaluation in a Public Environment

    Abstract:

    Supporting a wide variety of interaction styles across a diverse set of people is a significant challenge in human-robot interaction (HRI). In this work, we explore a data-driven approach that relies on crowdsourcing as a rich source of interactions that cover a wide repertoire of human behavior. We first develop an online game that requires two players to collaborate to solve a task. One player takes the role of a robot avatar and the other a human avatar, each with a different set of capabilities that must be coordinated to overcome challenges and complete the task. Leveraging the interaction data recorded in the online game, we present a novel technique for data-driven behavior generation using case-based planning for a real robot. We compare the resulting autonomous robot behavior against a Wizard of Oz base case condition in a real-world reproduction of the online game that was conducted at the Boston Museum of Science. Results of a post-study survey of participants indicate that the autonomous robot behavior matched the performance of the human-operated robot in several important measures. We examined video recordings of the real-world game to draw additional insights as to how the novice participants attempted to interact with the robot in a loosely structured collaborative task. We discovered that many of the collaborative interactions were generated in the moment and were driven by interpersonal dynamics, not necessarily by the task design. We explored using bids analysis as a meaningful construct to tap into affective qualities of HRI. An important lesson from this work is that in loosely structured collaborative tasks, robots need to be skillful in handling these in-the-moment interpersonal dynamics, as these dynamics have an important impact on the affective quality of the interaction for people. How such interactions dovetail with more task-oriented policies is an important area for future work, as we anticipate such interactions becoming commonplace in situations where personal robots perform loosely structured tasks in interaction with people in human living spaces.

  • The Network Robot System: Enabling Social Human-Robot Interaction in Public Spaces

    Abstract:

    What kind of framework is needed to realize social robot applications in real Public Environments? Based on several years of experience in conducting field studies with social robots in Public spaces, we identify key considerations that we have found to be indispensable in the development of robot services. We present a "network robot system" framework, which supports social robot services in five ways: observation of human behavior using Environmental sensor networks, structured knowledge sharing, centralized resource and service allocation, global path planning for coordination between robots, and support for selected recognition and decision tasks by a human operator. We describe our network robot system implementation and present a demonstration in a shopping mall, illustrating how such a network robot system framework can be used to support heterogeneous teams of robots providing services in a real Public Environment.

    O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o fluxo de termos aditivos aos contratos administrativos de obras do Instituto Federal do Amazonas Campus Manaus Zona Leste, com base nos princípios e ferramentas Lean Office. Esta ferramenta é oriunda da filosofia Lean Manfacturing, que versa sobre princípios para eliminação de desperdícios, tais como superprodução, inventário, defeito, transporte, movimentação desnecessária e espera. Neste sentido, esta pesquisa teve como motivação a identificação de desperdícios no processo de emissão de termo aditivo dos contratos de obras do IFAM-CMZL, apontando, a partir dos problemas identificados, áreas passíveis de melhorias. Esta pesquisa realizou-se em uma Instituição pública de ensino cujos procedimentos formais e burocráticos, precisam de melhorias, haja vista as constantes mudanças do mercado. O método utilizado para esta pesquisa foi o dedutivo e os meios para o levantamento de dados estão pautados na pesquisa documental, entrevista, observação direta, pesquisa de campo, pesquisa bibliográfica e estudo de caso. Os dados coletados através dos documentos serviram para construir o mapa do estado atual e o tempo total de cada processo que mostrou variabilidade de tempo e etapas faltantes. Em decorrência das etapas faltantes, foi aplicado um teste estatístico não paramétrico para validar se a falta destas etapas interfere no tempo total do processo. Através das entrevistas foi possível correlacionar as informações com os conceitos e ferramentas Lean Office o que favoreceu esta pesquisa, uma vez que estes conceitos podem ser utilizados dentro de ambiente público. Como resultados da pesquisa, a partir das contribuições teórico-práticas, sugere-se a aplicação dos conceitos Lean, diferente do rotineiro, apresentando mapas com os procedimentos estudados e analisados a fim de contribuir com sugestões de melhorias ao processo, entre elas destacam-se: em relação ao desperdício de tempo, sugere-se a aplicação dos 5S, fluxo contínuo de atividades e a ferramenta célula de trabalho; em relação ao retrabalho, prática comum em determinados setores da instituição, sugere-se a aplicação de treinamentos cujo objetivo é a melhoria contínua e consequentemente a diminuição dos desperdícios encontrados.This study aimed to analyze the flow of amendments to contracts administrative works - Instituto Federal do Amazonas Manaus Campus Zona Leste (IFAM-CMZL), based on the principles and tools Lean Office. This tool comes from the Lean philosophy, Manufacturing, which concerns principles for waste disposal, such as overproduction, inventory, defects, transport, handling and unnecessary waiting. In this sense, this research was motivated to identify waste in the process of issuing an addendum of works of IFAM - CMZL, pointing from the problems identified areas for improvement. This study was conducted in a Public education institution whose formal and bureaucratic procedures, need improvement, given the changing market. The method used for this research was deductive and the means for data collection are graded on desk research, interviews, direct observation, field research, literature review and case study. The data collected through the documents were used to build the map of the current state and the total time of each process that showed variability in time and steps missing. Due to the missing steps, we applied a nonparametric statistical test to validate that the lack of these steps affects the total process time. Through interviews it was possible to correlate the information with the concepts and tools Lean Office which favored this research, since these concepts can be used in Public Environment. The research results from the theoretical and practical contributions, we suggest the application of Lean concepts, different routine, with maps showing the procedures studied and analyzed in order to contribute with suggestions for improvements to the process, among them stand out: against the waste of time, it is suggested applying the 5S, continuous flow of activities and tool work cell, relative to rework - common practice in certain sectors of the institution, it is suggested the application of training aimed at continuous improvement and consequently the reduction of waste foun
