    Abstract:

    The article presents a short history of Finnish libraries and librarianship. The written culture in Finland started in the 15th century AD. The Reformation meant the eventual outbreak of the Finnish culture, both fromthe point of view of the religious and academic cultures. The Academy of Turku was established in 1640. The Public Library network started to evolve from the 17th century onward. From the beginning of the independence, i.e. 1917, libraries have played an important part in the development of an open and democratic society. At present there are Public libraries in all the municipalities as defined by the Public Library Act, in addition to the Finnish higher education and special libraries that constitute a modern Library network open to all citizens that utilizes modern Library technologies.

    Abstract:

    Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on selvittää kuinka hyvin esteettömyys ja saavutettavuus toteutuvat Turun pääkirjastossa. Työn toimeksiantajana toimii Turun kaupunginkirjasto. Opinnäytetyössä havainnoidaan esteettömyyttä ja saavutettavuutta kokoelmien ja aineistojen sekä tilojen osalta. Havainnoinnin runkona käytetään Yleisten kirjastojen saavutettavuussuositusta vuodelta 2016. Opinnäytetyön teoreettisessa osassa kerrotaan yleisesti esteettömyydestä ja saavutettavuudesta. Lisäksi käsitellään lyhyesti Yleisten kirjastojen saavutettavuussuositusta, kirjastolakia sekä yhdenvertaisuuslakia. Tilojen esteettömyyshavainnointia tehtiin Turun pääkirjastolla neljänä eri päivänä. Tiloja havainnoitiin silmämääräisesti, valokuvaamalla, keskustelemalla henkilökunnan kanssa sekä konkreettisesti mittanauhalla mittaamalla. Lisäksi kysyttiin sähköpostitse lisätietoa kirjaston kokoelmien ja aineistojen saavutettavuudesta sekä tiloihin liittyvistä asioista aiheesta tietäviltä henkilöiltä. Havainnoinnin ja saavutettavuussuositukseen vertailun perusteella voidaan todeta, että esteettömyys ja saavutettavuus toteutuvat Turun pääkirjastossa suurimmalta osin. Saavutettavaa aineistoa on saatavilla hyvin ja suurin osa esteettömyyteen liittyvistä suosituksista tilojen osalta täyttyy. Eniten kehittämisehdotuksia tuli liittyen pääsisäänkäyntiin (valaistus, äänimajakka, portaiden kontrastiraidat, käsijohteet) ja esteettömiin wc-tiloihin (oven vetimet, oven lukitsemiseen liittyvät asiat, wc-paperitelineiden, käsisuihkun yms. etäisyydet, vaatekoukkujen lisäys, hälytysjärjestelmään liittyvien asioiden kuntoon saattaminen). Lisäksi kaikkien portaiden käsijohteet olisi hyvä muuttaa suosituksen mukaisiksi.The objective of this thesis was to find out how well accessibility is fulfilled at Turku Main Library. The thesis was commissioned by Turku City Library. In the thesis, accessibility is observed related to the collections, materials and premises. The Accessibility Recommendation of Public Libraries (2016) was used as the basis for the observation. In the theoretical part of the thesis, accessibility is explained in general. The Accessibility Recommendation for Public Libraries, the Public Library Act and the Equality Act are also briefly explained. The observation of the Library’s accessibility was carried out at Turku Main Library on four different days. The premises were observed by eye, photographing, discussing with the staff and measuring heights and lengths with a measuring tape. Furthermore, the staff members who know about accessibility were asked by e-mail for additional information about the accessible collections, materials and matters that are related to the premises. Comparing the results of the observation and the Accessibility Recommendations for Public Libraries, it can be stated that accessibility is mostly well fulfilled at Turku Main Library. The accessible material is well available and the majority of the recommendations related to the premises are fulfilled. Most development proposals were in connection with the main entrance (the lighting, sound beacon, contrast stripes of the stairs and railings) and accessible toilets (the handles of the doors, matters that are related to the locking of the door, distances between the toilet paper holders, hand shower etc., increasing the amount of the clothes hooks, getting the alarm system in order). Furthermore, it would be worth changing the railings of all the stairs in accordance with the recommendation
