  • The Public Opinion Process: How the People Speak
    LEA's communication series, 1997
    Co-Authors: Irving Crespi
    Abstract:

What is Public Opinion? How can we best study it? This work presents a "process model" that answers these questions by defining Public Opinion in a way that also identifies an approach to studying it. The model serves as a framework into which the findings of empirical research are integrated, producing a comprehensive understanding of Public Opinion that encompasses the congeries of middle-range theories that have emerged from empirical research. The three-dimensional process model--and the way it is explicated--satisfies the diverse and sometimes divergent needs and interests of political scientists, sociologists, social psychologists, and communication specialists who study Public Opinion. This is achieved by clearly differentiating and interrelating the following: * individual Opinions--the judgmental outcomes of a process in which attitudinal systems--comprised of beliefs, values/interests, and feelings--function as intervening variables that direct and structure perceptions of Public issues; * collective Opinions--the outcomes of communication from which mutual awareness emerges and that integrate separate individual Opinions into a significant social force; and * political roles of collective and individual Opinions--the outcomes of the extent to which collective and individual Opinions have achieved legitimacy as the basis for governing a people. DON'T USE THIS PARAGRAPH FOR GENERAL CATALOGS… Each dimension of the model has its corresponding subprocess: transactions between individuals and their environments, communications among individuals and collectives, and political legitimation of Public Opinion. Since the process model is -- by definition -- interactional, none of the three dimensions has theoretical or sequential priority over the others. Instead of treating the psychological, political, and sociological aspects of Public Opinion as separate stages of an unidirectional process, the three aspects are modeled as dimensions of a complex, ongoing system in continuous interaction with each other. This conceptualization satisfies the need for a truly interdisciplinary theory in that it demands that each dimension be studied in terms of its defining sub-process. It also avoids the twin errors of reductionism and reification in the study of Public Opinion.

  • Research on clustering analysis of Internet Public Opinion
    Cluster Computing, 2019
Co-Authors: Xuegang Chen, Sheng Duan, Lu-da Wang
    Abstract:

In order to enhance the real-time performance of Internet Public Opinion recognizing and early warning, and improve the accuracy of the analysis of Internet Public Opinion for hot spots, similarity analysis methods of Internet Public Opinion are put forward. Firstly, web crawler technology is introduced for obtaining accurate and comprehensive Public Opinion. Secondly, propose similarity algorithms from the aspects of known and unknown of the subject. At the same time, considering the uncertainty and fuzzy of Internet Public Opinion, the concept of information entropy is introduced, and present a similarity analysis approach of Internet Public Opinion based on information entropy, and can cluster and identify hot spots and crisis events of Internet Public Opinion. Experimental results show that the proposed methods can quickly obtain the Internet Public Opinion, and has high accuracy rate of clustering, which provide an important technical support for Internet Public Opinion monitoring and recognizing.

  • Trend prediction of internet Public Opinion based on collaborative filtering
2016 12th International Conference on Natural Computation Fuzzy Systems and Knowledge Discovery (ICNC-FSKD), 2016
Co-Authors: Xuegang Chen, Jieren Cheng, Xiangyan Tang, Jialu Zhang
    Abstract:

Collaborative filtering recommendation has very important applications in the personalized recommendation. Especially it is widely used in e-commerce. The key of this approach is to find similar users or items using user-item rating matrix so that the system can show recommendations and provide a lot similar or interesting advice for users. The method of internet Public Opinion trend prediction based on collaborative filtering is proposed in order to solve the problem of internet Public Opinion trend prediction. This paper introduces the collaborative filtering algorithm and study user-based collaborative filtering algorithm, then the principles of internet Public Opinion trend prediction based on collaborative filtering are analyzed, and the frame structure of internet Public Opinion trend prediction is designed. Furthermore, a series of experimental results show that this method can effectively predict the development trend of internet Public Opinion.

  • Research on Key Technologies of Internet Public Opinion Monitoring and Analysis System
2018 IEEE 4th Information Technology and Mechatronics Engineering Conference (ITOEC), 2018
    Co-Authors: Xiejie Hu, Chuan Lu
    Abstract:

In view of the frequent occurrence of Internet Public Opinion on the Internet, this paper analyzes the Internet Public Opinion monitoring and analysis system requirements and business processes. It introduces five-layer architecture of Public Opinion monitoring and analysis system, which consist of information automatic collection, information preprocessing, Public Opinion database, Public Opinion analysis and service, as well as Public Opinion visualization and report. Then, we study the implementation of key technologies in the system, including Public Opinion information collection technology, information search and clustering analysis, speech analysis and trend prediction analysis. Compared with the original system, the extraction accuracy of the theme and the accuracy of predicting the trend of Public Opinion for this redesigned system are significantly improved, which further verify the correctness of the proposed scheme.
