  • exhuming the defeated civil war mass graves in 21st century spain
    American Ethnologist, 2013
    Co-Authors: Francisco Ferrandiz
    Abstract:

The exhumations of two mass graves in a small Spanish village, conducted eight years apart, illustrate changing attitudes toward and procedures related to Civil War (1936–39) disinterments over the last decade. The sudden Public Visibility of skeletons of civilians executed by Francisco Franco's paramilitary has triggered heated debates both about how to handle these remains in a consolidated democratic state and what to make of related judicial and institutional initiatives. I place the particularity of Spain's “human rights outsourcing model” regarding Civil War crimes in comparative perspective within the framework of transnational human rights discourses and practices.

  • Discursive opportunities and the evolution of right-wing violence in Germany
    American Journal of Sociology, 2004
    Co-Authors: Ruud Koopmans, Susan Olzak
    Abstract:

This article explores the link between violence and Public discourse. It suggests that media attention to radical right violence and Public reactions to violence affect the clustering of targets and the temporal and spatial distribution of violence. The notion of “discursive opportunities” is introduced, and the article argues that it can serve to link political opportunity structure and framing perspectives on collective action. Using a cross‐sectional and time‐series design to model event counts in states in Germany, this study finds that differential Public Visibility, resonance, and legitimacy of right‐wing violence significantly affected the rate of violence against different target groups.

  • will green csr enhance innovation a perspective of Public Visibility and firm transparency
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2018
    Co-Authors: Weiwei Wu, Tachia Chin
    Abstract:

In response to the asking and requiring of stakeholders to be more environmentally responsible, firms must commit to green corporate social responsibility (CSR). Firms being green and responsible always can acquire intangible resources that are important for firm innovation. Given the scarcity of existing research addressing relevant issues in depth, this paper expands our understanding of green CSR by revealing its antecedent effects on firm innovation performance. We also include Public Visibility and firm transparency as contingency factors to explore the relationship between green CSR and firm innovation performance. Using data collected from Publicly listed firms in China, we find that greater innovation performance is associated with an increase in firm green CSR, and the positive relationship between green CSR and innovation performance is moderated by Public Visibility and firm transparency. Based on the results, theoretical contributions and practical implications are outlined.

  • social responsibility disclosure a study of proxies for the Public Visibility of portuguese banks
    British Accounting Review, 2008
Co-Authors: Manuel Castelo Branco, Lucia Lima Rodrigues
    Abstract:

Abstract This study, grounded in legitimacy theory (LT), examines social responsibility disclosure (SRD) on the Internet by Portuguese banks in 2004 and 2005. It compares these disclosures with those made in annual reports in 2003 and 2004. According to LT, companies with a higher Public Visibility are expected to exhibit greater concern to improve the corporate image through SRD. Size and industry affiliation are two of the most popular proxies for Public Visibility. By using companies from one industry this study explores size-related measures as proxies for Public Visibility. It analyses several size-related proxies and proposes a measure which has never been discussed in SRD studies: a spatial competition index based on the number of branches. Results suggest that the perspective adopted explains SRD by Portuguese banks and that the new measure proposed should be explored further in SRD empirical research.
