  • A Broadband Cavity-Backed Slot Radiating Element in Transmission Configuration
IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2018
    Co-Authors: Alberto Hernandez-escobar, Elena Abdo-sánchez, Carlos Camacho-penalosa
    Abstract:

A planar technology stripline-fed slot Radiating Element in transmission configuration is proposed. Its main advantages are the broad impedance bandwidth achieved and the property that it only radiates into half-space, which are obtained, respectively, with the use of its complementary strip Element and using a cavity-backed slot. A lattice network circuit model is proposed both to explain the behavior of the structure and to establish a design methodology. Its capabilities are shown through the simulation and demonstrated in a proof-of-concept prototype. Measurement results show a unidirectional broadside radiation pattern and a fractional bandwidth of 48%, significantly superior to other slot-based Radiating Elements found in the literature. The Element has the ideal characteristics for building series-fed reconfigurable arrays for wideband applications.

  • Novel Implementation for a Broadband Cavity-Backed Slot Fed in Transmission Configuration
12th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2018), 2018
    Co-Authors: A. Hernuandez-escobar, E. Abdo-suanchez, Carlos Camacho-penalosa
    Abstract:

A novel Radiating Element proposed previously by the authors is alternatively implemented using enclosed microstrip configuration. The Radiating Element shows broad impedance bandwidth and unidirectional radiation pattern. Its transmission configuration makes it ideal for series-fed arrays. The new implementation presents significant improvements concerning easiness of fabrication, robustness and compatibility with other technologies. A prototype designed to work in the 6 GHz band has been fabricated and measured, and has shown the expected performance: a 50% of fractional impedance bandwidth and unidirectional, stable radiation patterns.

  • Planar Broadband Slot Radiating Element Based on Microstrip-Slot Coupling for Series-fed Arrays
IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2012
    Co-Authors: Elena Abdo-sánchez, J. E. Page, Teresa M. Martin-guerrero, Jaime Esteban, Carlos Camacho-penalosa
    Abstract:

A novel planar slot Radiating Element with applications in series-fed arrays and significant bandwidth enhancement is presented in this communication. The structure is based on the microstrip-slotline coupling and simply consists of a microstrip-fed slot with a symmetrically-arranged strip conductor superimposed onto it. The broad impedance bandwidth (up to 16 GHz) lies in the resulting all-pass section that the strip and the slot make up. A theoretical study of the structure in terms of even and odd modes as well as a straightforward equivalent circuit are provided, which offer the required analytical tools to state the design methodology. Experimental and simulated results corroborate that the strip acts as a mere matching Element that does not practically alter the slot radiation characteristics.

  • Array design techniques of microstrip comb-line antennas in millimeter-wave band
2012 IEEE Asia-Pacific Conference on Antennas and Propagation, 2012
Co-Authors: Kunio Sakakibara, Nobuyoshi Kikuma, Hiroshi Hirayama
    Abstract:

Traveling-wave array design techniques are applied to microstrip comb-line antennas in the millimeter-wave band. The simple design procedure is demonstrated. To neglect the effect of reflection waves in the design, a Radiating Element with a reflection-canceling slit and a stub-integrated Radiating Element are proposed. Matching performance is also improved.

  • Low-Sidelobe Design of Microstrip Comb-Line Antennas Using Stub-Integrated Radiating Elements in the Millimeter-Wave Band
IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2012
Co-Authors: Shingo Sugawa, Kunio Sakakibara, Nobuyoshi Kikuma, Hiroshi Hirayama
    Abstract:

A novel Radiating Element with a matching circuit was developed for comb-line antennas of traveling-wave operation. In the design of low-sidelobe traveling-wave array antennas, large coupling is required for array Elements of the comb-line antenna around the input port. Furthermore, the traveling-wave arrays, whose number of Elements is small, also require large coupling because the radiation power for each array Element is assigned to be much larger. However, wide Radiating Elements for large coupling perform poor impedance matching characteristics and radiate large cross polarization. Thus, we proposed a novel Radiating Element with matching stub in parallel to the Radiating Element to realize strong Radiating power, low reflection, and low cross-polarization, simultaneously. The simulated and measured performances of low-sidelobe 14-Element and 6-Element antennas were demonstrated in this paper.

  • Design of Microstrip Comb-Line Antenna Array Composed of Elements with Matching Circuit
    2009
Co-Authors: Shingo Sugawa, Kunio Sakakibara, Nobuyoshi Kikuma, Hiroshi Hirayama
    Abstract:

Millimeter-wave antennas have been developed for various applications such as broadband high-speed wireless communication systems and automotive radar systems. Microstrip antennas are more advantageous than other millimeter-wave antennas at the viewpoints of low profile and low cost. On the other hand, feeding loss due to transmission loss of microstrip line is significant problem in array feeding. So, microstrip array antennas are suitable for relatively low gain applications such as a subarray of digital beam forming (DBF) systems. A comb-line feeding system is effective at the point of relatively low loss compared with other microstrip patch array antennas fed by parallel or ordinary series feeding [1]. In the design of quite low sidelobe comb-line antennas such as −30 dB, wide range from 0.9 % up to 65 % of coupling to the air is required to realize steep Taylor distribution on the aperture. The coupling power is controlled by the width of the Radiating Element in the conventional comb-line antenna. However, upper limit of the radiation from the wide Radiating Element is still low. Furthermore, high return loss and high cross polarization are serious problem for wide Radiating-Element. We propose novel Radiating Element with matching-circuit to realize large coupling power and low cross polarization simultaneously. Measured performance of 14-Element antenna is presented in this paper.

  • Laminated waveguide as Radiating Element for array applications
IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2006
    Co-Authors: Michel Clenet, J. Litzenberger, David H. Lee, S. Thirakoune, Gilbert A. Morin, Yahia M. M. Antar
    Abstract:

This paper reports on the study of a new antenna as well as a five-Element array prototype developed for communications in K-band and suitable for low temperature co-fired ceramic technology. The Radiating Element is an open waveguide realized in laminated technology. A special coaxial-to-waveguide transition has also been designed as feed port for measuring the prototypes. The Element exhibits a 1 GHz bandwidth centered at 20.7 GHz and a 2.7 dBi gain. In an array configuration, mutual coupling between the Elements is lower than -18 dB across the bandwidth. The simulated boresight radiation pattern of a five-Element array is stable over the bandwidth and the gain reaches 9.2 dBi at 20.7 GHz. The measurements of the radiation pattern for a 20-degree scan angle, as well as the simulation, demonstrate the scanning capability of this array

  • Laminated waveguide as Radiating Element for phased array with brick architecture
11th International Symposium on Antenna Technology and Applied Electromagnetics [ANTEM 2005], 2005
Co-Authors: Michel Clenet, J. Litzenberger, S. Thirakoune, Gilbert A. Morin, David Lee, Aldo Petosa, Yahia M. M. Antar
    Abstract:

This paper presents the study of a five-Element array antenna prototype developed for communications in K-band. The Radiating Elements are Radiating waveguides realised in laminated technology. The Element exhibits a 1 GHz bandwidth around a 20.7 GHz centre frequency. The radiation patterns indicate a gain of 2.7 dBi. In an array configuration the input impedance of each Radiating Element is slightly perturbed by the proximity of the other antennas. The coupling between the Elements, however, remains below −18 dB across the bandwidth. The simulated boresight radiation pattern of a five-Element array is stable over the bandwidth and the gain reaches 9.2 dBi at 20.7 GHz. The scanned radiation patterns obtained by simulation show a good behaviour of this array for scan angles up to 50°.
