This Information can be as mundane as telephone numbers and work schedules or as important as a detailed emergency procedure for treating a patient with a severe contrast reaction. We have installed some hierarchical, textual database Systems on the same computer that runs our Radiology Information System. Several different databases are maintained, including protocol manuals, emergency procedures, and a directory of telephone and pager numbers. This Information is accessible from any terminal connected to our Radiology Information System and from any personal computer connected to our department's local area network or terminal server. The workstation also serves as an interactive data terminal for our Radiology Information System. A data-base management program locally stores quantitative and descriptive sonographic results. Algorithms are used to analyze growth parameters over serial examinations, plot growth curves, generate a radiologic report, and provide instantaneous diagnostic assistance and suggestions. A bibliographic data-base System containing more than 3000 references (with abstracts) in the obstetric sonographic literature is integrated with the software's analytical functions. A telecommunications software module performs dialogues, such as immediate automatic transcription of the sonographic report, with the Radiology Information System. European Radiology, 2009Co-Authors: Pette Hurle, Truls Ostbye, Arne Orthne, Fredrik A Dahl, Pal GulbrandseAbstract:This study aimed to determine how clinicians adapted to and utilized new routines for accessing Radiology reports after the integration of an electronic patient record (EPR) with a Radiology Information System (RIS). Activity-related data describing the availability and receipt of Radiology reports were collected from the EPR and the RIS over a period of 2 years. Twelve percent of the final Radiology reports had not been opened 4 weeks after they had been entered into the EPR. For opened reports, the median time after a report was available in the EPR until it was first opened by a clinician was less than 1 h for preliminary reports and less than 4 h for final Radiology reports. The use of Radiology reports was stable during the second observation year. Some reports were not opened for professional as well as technical reasons. The integrated Information Systems offered a potential for improving routines related to the transmission of Radiology reports. Clinicians did not fully take advantage of this potential in the 2 years after its introduction.

Methods A retrospective search of the reports for all lower limb sonographic scans for the detection of DVT in 2011 was performed using the Radiology Information System to identify the baseline rate of use of the term. Nontargeted and subsequently targeted e-mails were then sent to reporters of such sonographic scans over a 6-month follow-up period, and the results were reevaluated. Results The baseline rate of use of the term was 17% before any intervention. It decreased to 10% following nontargeted intervention, and to 6% following targeted e-mail intervention. There were no cases of patients coming to harm as a result of the use of the term during the study period. Conclusions A simple and inexpensive System of e-mails to reporters resulted in a decline in the rate of use of the misleading term “superficial femoral vein.” © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
