METHODS: Twelve hundred women, ages 20–74, were sampled from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) records. Women for whom telephone numbers were obtained (N = 771) were Randomly assigned to RDD or TTC. The respondents participated in a brief telephone interview. Odd ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to estimate differences in characteristics of the respondents between the two contact strategies. RESULTS: Telephone numbers were obtained for 79% of women aged ⩾ 55 years and for only 38% of women aged < 55 years. Interviews were obtained for 48% of women for whom we obtained telephone numbers, and for 77% of women for whom eligibility was confirmed via telephone contact. Participation of target women appeared to be higher for the TTC than the RDD group (42% vs. 35%, p = 0.054). Among respondents who were ⩾ 55 years old, those in the TTC group were 80% more likely (OR = 1.8, 95% CI: 0.9–3.4) to report a serious medical condition than women in the RDD group, 60% less likely (OR = 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2–1.0) to report having used oral contraceptives, and 80% less likely (OR = 0.2, 95% CI: 0.1–0.5) to report having had breast surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Characteristics of respondents differed according to method of contact. These differences, along with the sampling frame used, should be considered when interpreting findings of case-control studies.

Two thousand women living throughout the United States identified by Random Digit Dialing completed a computer-assisted telephone interview about history of vaginal symptoms and use of healthcare services in response to these symptoms. The analysis was limited to 1698 white (WA) and 144 African American (AA) women (n = 1842). An episode of vaginal symptoms of any severity during 1995 was reported by 7.5% of WA women and 18.1% of AA women. Fifty-five percent of WA women and 83% of AA women with symptoms consulted a healthcare professional about their most recent episode. The racial difference in prevalence and consultation was not explained by marital status, education, employment, or lifetime number of sex partners. NATIONAL ELDER MISTREATMENT STUDY WAVE II: MENTAL HEALTH CORRELATES OF FINANCIAL MISTREATMENT

Thus, the potential relevance of financial abuse to mental health and perceived health is relatively unknown, and the objective of this article is to illustrate this relationship. Method: The second wave of the National Elder Mistreatment Study used Random Digit Dialing telephone survey methodology to assess both recent financial mistreatment and its potential mental health correlates (i.e., diagnoses of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD], generalized anxiety disorder [GAD], and self-ratings of physical health) in 774 older adults. Results: The study indicated that past-year Wave II financial mistreatment was associated with significantly increased likelihood of depression, PTSD, GAD, and poor self-rated health; and financial mistreatment perpetrated by family members was associated with particularly increased risk of depression. Discussion: Assessment of mental health is relevant and important in cases of financial abuse.

The National Elder Mistreatment Study: Race and Ethnicity Findings

Hernandez-tejada, Wendy Muzzy, Ananda B Amstadter, Ron AciernoAbstract:The prevalence of elder mistreatment with respect to race and ethnicity was examined in an unweighted sample of 5,777 participants (5,776 participants in weighted sample). Random Digit Dialing methodology was used to select a representative sample of community-dwelling older adults, and the survey was available in English and Spanish. Mistreatment types included emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Race- and ethnicity-based differences were largely absent, and the only observed increase was for physical mistreatment among non-White older adults; however, this association was not sustained in multivariate analyses controlling for income, health status, and social support. Findings are in contrast to prior reports of increased risk of mistreatment in minority populations and point to correlated and modifiable factors of social support and poor health as targets for preventive intervention.

Random Digit Dialing (RDD) was used to derive a representative sample in terms of age and gender; computer-assisted telephone interviewing was used to standardize collection of demographic, correlate, and mistreatment data. Prevalence estimates and mistreatment correlates were obtained and subjected to logistic regression. A total of 902 participants provided data. Do Incident and Perpetrator Characteristics of Elder Mistreatment Differ by Gender of the Victim? Results from the National Elder Mistreatment Study

Random Digit Dialing across geographic strata was used to compile a nationally representative sample; computer assisted telephone interviewing was used to standardize collection of demographic, mistreatment, and perpetrator and incident characteristics data. The final sample size consisted of 5,777 older adults. Approximately one in ten adults reported at least one form of mistreatment, and the majority of incidents were not reported to authorities. Perpetrators of physical mistreatment against men had more “pathological” characteristics compared to perpetrators of physical mistreatment against women. This affected behavioral surveillance by creating a staggering decrease in coverage for surveys that relied on Random-Digit Dialing (RDD) sampling, resulting in biased health estimates (1–5). During this time, innovative sampling approaches that integrated both landlines and cellular phones were developed (6). Recently, some have suggested that the rate of wireless substitution has reached the point at which it is no longer necessary to sample landlines (7, 8). Indeed, the 2011 National Young Adult Health Survey (NYAHS), a national cellular phone–only RDD survey, demonstrated equal sample quality and some efficiency relative to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which samples both landlines and cellular phones (7). Emergent communication technologies continue to be rapidly adopted. There has been a dramatic increase in smart-phone use, particularly among males, younger adults, and minorities (9). These devices have communication abilities beyond those of traditional cellular phones that provide users alternative ways to communicate instantly (e.g., chat functions, social media), and these functions have been adopted rapidly in recent years (10). In the context of telephone survey methodology, perhaps the most worrisome development is technologies to verbally communicate via smartphone applications without using a telephone number. Young adults, men, and Latinos are most likely to use such features (10). Cellular phones are now used less as “traditional” telephones and more as broad communication and media devices. Although the impact of this technological advance on RDD sampling of cellular phones is not known, it may affect cellular phone surveys in a manner similar to that in which wireless substitution affected landline surveys. As such, we seek to answer 2 questions. 1) Is the use of cellular phone RDD a stable method of sampling? 2) Has the sample representativeness changed (i.e., deteriorated or improved) for population subgroups?

However, 95% of this group has cellular phones. This article reports on the 2011 National Young Adult Health Survey (NYAHS), a pilot study conducted in the 50 US states and Washington, DC, that used Random-Digit Dialing of cellular phones and benchmarked this methodology against that of the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Comparisons of the demographic distributions of subjects in the NYAHS and BRFSS (aged 18–34 years) with US Census data revealed adequate reach for all demographic subgroups. After adjustment for design factors, the mean absolute deviations across demographic groups were 3 percentage points for the NYAHS and 2.8 percentage points for the BRFSS, nationally, and were comparable for each census region. Two-sided z tests comparing cigarette smoking prevalence revealed no significant differences between NYAHS and BRFSS participants overall or by subgroups. The design effects of the sampling weight were 2.09 for the NYAHS and 3.26 for the BRFSS. Response rates for the NYAHS and BRFSS cellular phone sampling frames were comparable. Our assessment of the NYAHS methodology found that Random-Digit Dialing of cellular phones is a feasible methodology for surveillance of young adults.
