  • Pricing and quality decisions and financial incentives for sustainable product design with Recycled Material content under price leadership
International Journal of Production Economics, 2014
Co-Authors: Chialin Chen, Lucy Qian Liu
    Abstract:

Design for recycling has been promoted by companies and governments around the world as one of the most important practices for achieving sustainability. The success or failure of such a practice, however, depends heavily on the financial incentives for firms to design products with more Recycled or recyclable Material contents. An interesting phenomenon that can be observed in many markets with products made predominately from either virgin or Recycled Materials is the existence of price leadership. In this paper, we utilize an interdisciplinary approach with both theoretical and empirical analyses to study the pricing and design decisions for products with virgin and Recycled Material contents in a duopoly market consisting of both the environmentally conscious (green) and non-environmentally conscious (brown) consumers under price leadership. Our analytical results show that the brown segment's efficient quality provides an "anchor product position" for the price leader regardless of whether the price leader is a brown or green firm. The price follower's financial incentive for becoming a green or brown firm will then lead to different cases of price leadership with very different environmental consequences. Specifically, the arrangement where the brown and green firms are the price leader and follower, respectively, leads to more environmentally friendly design decisions than those under the other arrangement where the duopolists switch their pricing roles. In addition, we conduct an empirical analysis to explore the specific types of price leadership in the markets of aluminum, cardboards, and PET. Based on the equilibrium pricing and quality decisions, we analyze the financial incentives for the more environmentally friendly case of price leadership to be realized, and derive important insights to formulating strategies and policies to implement the practice of design for recycling from the interdisciplinary perspective. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

  • Influence of the Recycled Material Percentage on the Mechanical Behaviour of HDPE for Injection Moulding Process for an Ecologycal Design
    Advanced Materials Research, 2012
Co-Authors: Carlos Javierre, Angel Fernandez, Victor Camanes
    Abstract:

Nowadays plastic Materials recycling aims most of the time to use the Recycled Material to manufacture products of less requirements than the original products, so the Material is depreciated. It would be important to recycle plastic Materials to use them for the same applications they were initially used. To make this possible it would be necessary to characterize the Recycled Material properties, design products taking into account that they are going to be produced with Recycled Material and to be able to recuperate the product at the end of its lifetime. An example of this designing philosophy is going to be presented in this work, applied to large trash containers produced with HDPE (RIGIDEX5740UA), where the product can be easily recovered at the end of its lifetime and also the amount of polymer Material wasted during thermoplastic injection moulding is very high. Recycling mills convert parts into small pieces that are used as feed Material for injection again, by mixing it in different percentages with raw Material. This mixture of both raw and Recycled Material modifies Material properties according to the percentage of Recycled Material introduced. Some of the properties affected by this modification are those related to mechanical behaviour. This paper analyzes the mechanical behaviour of Material with different percentages of Recycled Material. Test parts have been injected with different percentage of Recycled Material and have been tested by a tensile machine. Results like; Stress at yield, Stress at break and Young Modulus have been calculated and analysed. The product of this work has been designed using only one plastic Material, which is very helpful from the point of view of manufacturing and recycling. In these kinds of parts a very tight safety factor is used, thats why to know exactly Material properties is very important during its design.

  • influence of the Recycled Material percentage on the rheological behaviour of hdpe for injection moulding process
    Waste Management, 2007
Co-Authors: Carlos Javierre, Isabel Claveria, L Ponz, J Aisa, Angel Fernandez
    Abstract:

The amount of polymer Material wasted during thermoplastic injection moulding is very high. It comes from both the feed system of the part, and parts necessary to set up the mould, as well as the scrap generated along the process due to quality problems. The residues are managed through polymer recycling that allows reuse of the Materials in the manufacturing injection process. Recycling mills convert the parts into small pieces that are used as feed Material for injection, by mixing the Recycled feedstock in different percentages with raw Material. This mixture of both raw and Recycled Material modifies Material properties according to the percentage of Recycled Material introduced. Some of the properties affected by this modification are those related to rheologic behaviour, which strongly conditions the future injection moulding process. This paper analyzes the rheologic behaviour of Material with different percentages of Recycled Material by means of a capillary rheometer, and evaluates the influence of the corresponding viscosity curves obtained on the injection moulding process, where small variations of parameters related to rheological behaviour, such as pressure or clamping force, can be critical to the viability and cost of the parts manufactured by injection moulding.

  • impact assessment of Recycled Materials over the preheating of Recycled asphalt concrete
Bulletin of the Chinese ceramic society, 2016
Co-Authors: Nian Hongfen, Zhou Chuanxing, W U Yuge
    Abstract:

In recent years, due to over-exploitation of resources, resulting in increasing prices of construction Materials, coupled with people’s increasing emphasis on the concept of recycling resources,it has great importance to eliminating road asphalt concrete recycling Material recycling. However,in the course of transmission,we can only know the beginning of the end to send mixing drum inlet temperature of heating much, and can not actually grasp the actual temperature inside the mixing drum. Therefore,Recycled Materials are likely to be heated to high temperatures, resulting in aging and even carbonization, thereby affecting the quality of Recycled asphalt concrete. In this study,Recycled asphalt mixing plant asphalt concrete as research Material,Recycled Material according to different aging conditions mainly microscopic differences and engineering nature to explore, study results showed that excessive preheat the Recycled Material would indeed cause the quality of Recycled asphalt concrete is not good, especially the ability to resist water violations decreased a lot.
