    Abstract:

    We study threshold properties of random constraint satisfaction problems under a probabilistic model due to Molloy [Models for random constraint satisfaction problems, in: Proceedings of the 32nd ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing, 2002]. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of a sharp threshold. In the boolean case, it gives an independent proof for the more difficult half of a classification result conjectured by Creignou and Daude [Generalized satisfiability problems: minimal elements and phase transitions. Theor. Comput. Sci. 302(1-3)(2003) 417-430], proved in a restricted case by the same authors [Combinatorial sharpness criterion and phase transition classification for random CSPs, Inform. Comput. 190(2) (2004) 220-238], and established by them [Coarse and sharp thresholds for random generalized satisfiability problems, in: M. Drmota, P. Flajolet, D. Gardy, B. Gittenberger (Eds.), Mathematics and Computer Science III: Algorithms, Trees, Combinatorics and Probabilities, Birkhauser, Basel, September 2004, pp. 507-517] while this paper was in the Refereeing Process.

    The goal of this Feature Issue was to present new operational research results on ''Planning and Scheduling in Industrial and Logistic Systems". Fifteen papers were submitted to the issue and, after a long and tedious Refereeing Process, only four papers were finally accepted. Three of the papers are on scheduling, but in rather different settings, and the last one proposes a novel algorithm for calculating safety stocks.

    Scientists are measured by their publications. Yet anonymous peer review is far from transparent. Does bias lurk within the Refereeing Process? Investigating the outcomes of manuscript submissions suggests that the overall Process is not sexist, but differences in acceptance rates across journals according to gender of the first author give grounds for caution. Manuscripts with more authors and by native English speakers are more successful; whether this is due to bias remains to be seen.

The following aspects are also focused on: typical points of criticism usually raised in referees’ reports, and the necessity for clarity of expression and lucid scholarly style. Specific examples of how to enhance the technical and language finish of an article are also included. This article is the outcome of many years of practical work within the Bureau for Scholarly Journals; hence the publication of it in In die Skriflig, one of the journals Processed by the Bureau.
