  • Quality assessment of petroleum fractions from road side vendors and illegal refineries in Delta state
Faculty of Science University of Port Harcourt Port Harcourt, 2017
    Co-Authors: Monago K.o., Otobrise C, Emoyan O.o.
    Abstract:

The levels of adulteration in Petroleum fractions of petrol (PMS), kerosene (DPK) and diesel (AGO) was studied. Samples were collected from road side vendors “black market” at Sapele and from two illegal refineries at Isaba and Bomadi. They were analysed for density at 150C, specific gravity at 600F, API gravity, Reid Vapour Pressure, kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity, gum content, cloud point, pour point, flash point, auto distillation and moisture content, using standard procedures of the ASTM. The results were compared with limits set by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Nigeria. The physio-chemical properties of PMS from DPR limits ranged between 4.83-6.76% for density at 150C; 1.85-3.32% for specific gravity at 600F; -10.68- -5.95% for API gravity; 33.33-300% for Reid Vapour Pressure; -41.00- -23.00% for kinematic viscosity; -35.71- -15.71% for dynamic viscosity; -75.00- -40.00% for cloud point and <1% for flash point. The deviations of the same properties for DPK samples ranged between -0.12-0.86%; -1.09-0.12%; -2.84-1.77%; <1%; -33.00- -31.50%; -31.88- -29.88%; -130.00- -90.00% and -4.00-44.00%. Whereas the deviations of the same properties for AGO samples ranged between 4.39-6.59%;  0.78-3.01%; -8.95-3.19%; <1%; -18.67-55.00%; -19.62-56.54%; -87.50- -75.00% and -40.00-48.89%. It was concluded that the fraction were significantly adulterated.Key Words: Petroleum fractions, adulteration, black market, illegal refineries

  • QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF PETROLEUM FRACTIONS FROM ROAD SIDE VENDORS AND FILLING STATIONS IN EFFURUN, DELTA STATE
Nigerian Journal of Science and Environment, 2013
    Co-Authors: Otobrise C
    Abstract:

The levels of adulteration in Petroleum fractions like petrol (PMS), kerosene (DPK) and diesel (AGO) was studied. Samples were collected from some road side vendors (black market) and filling stations within Effurun in Delta state. They were analysed for density at 150C, specific gravity at 600F, API gravity, Reid Vapour Pressure, kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity, cloud point, pour point, flash point, auto distillation and moisture content, using standard procedures of the ASTM. The results were compared with limits set by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Nigeria. The investigation revealed the level of adulteration to be significant. The deviations of the physio-chemical properties of PMS from DPR limits ranged between 4.83-6.21% for density at 150C; 0.03-1.45% for specific gravity at 600F; -8.93- -4.72% for API gravity; 311.11- 388.89% for Reid Vapour Pressure; -46.00- -45.00% for kinematic viscosity; -41.43- -40.00% for dynamic viscosity; 0.00- 10.00% for cloud point and

  • Physical properties of gasoline, isobutanol and ETBE binary blends in comparison with gasoline ethanol blends
    Fuel, 2016
Co-Authors: Luis Miguel Rodríguez-antón, Fernando Gutíerrez-martín, Yolanda Doce
    Abstract:

The addition of renewable fuels to gasoline, such as bio-alcohols or bio-ethers is required in order to be in compliance with current environmental directives. Nevertheless, they change fuel properties which could affect standards compliance, engine performance and air emissions. This paper studies the impact of ethanol (EtOH), isobutanol (iBtOH) or ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) on the Reid Vapour Pressure (RVP), distillation curves, density and other related gasoline properties, which belong to the group of relevant specifications that affect engine operation. The main conclusion is that the addition of ETBE or iBtOH has important advantages over EtOH in terms of energy density, air/fuel ratio, Vapour Pressure, renewable content and other effects; it was also found that the addition of ETBE affects equally and linearly the properties of two kinds of base gasolines as compared with other studies.

  • Experimental determination of some physical properties of gasoline, ethanol and ETBE blends
    Fuel, 2013
    Co-Authors: Luis Miguel Rodríguez-antón, Miguel Hernández-campos, Francisco Sanz-pérez
    Abstract:

Abstract The addition of oxygenated renewable fuels, such as ethanol or ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) to standard gasoline may be necessary to comply with some environmental directives but could also prevent compliance with some fuel regulations and could also seriously change engine performance. From this point of view, the Reid Vapour Pressure (RVP), the distillation curve, the oxygen content and the density belong to the group of the most relevant parameters. This study evaluates the influence of the simultaneous addition of ethanol and ETBE on some physical properties of engine gasoline. The main conclusion is that the simultaneous addition of ETBE and ethanol changes the RVP, the distillation curve and the density in a way that can affect engine operation and the mandatory EN 228 and ASTM D4814 standards. Some opposite properties of both oxygenates could help to increase the renewable energy content without preventing compliance with these regulations.

  • Preliminary hydrocarbon analysis of crude oils from Umutu/Bomu fields, south west Niger Delta Nigeria
Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V., 2013
    Co-Authors: Onojake M.c., Osuji, Leo C., Oforka N.c.
    Abstract:

AbstractSeven different crude oil samples were collected from two oil fields in the Niger Delta Nigeria. The bulk properties of these crude oils which include API gravity, Reid Vapour Pressure; kinematic viscosity, dynamic viscosity, moisture, gum content and cloud point were analysed. Aliphatic biomarkers were used as supporting tool to deduce the geochemical characteristics such as thermal maturity, depositional environments, source of organic matter and extent of biodegradation. Results show that API° gravity ranged from 29.00° to 85.00°, specific gravity 0.65 to 0.88, 3.00 to 9.00, Reid Vapour Pressure 3.00 to 9.00kPa, kinematic viscosity 0.90 to 10.10cSt, dynamic viscosity 0.70 to 8.90cP, moisture content 0.13% to 26.00%, gum content 6.27 to 45.84mg/L, cloud point 3.00 to 12.00°C, pour point −7.00 to 4.00°C and flash point
