    Abstract:

    Abstract A supersymmetric Randall–Sundrum brane-world demands that not merely the graviton but the entire supergravity multiplet be trapped on the brane. To demonstrate this, we present a complete ansatz for the reduction of ( D =5, N =4) gauged supergravity to ( D =4, N =2) ungauged supergravity in the Randall–Sundrum geometry. We verify that it is consistent to lowest order in fermion terms. In particular, we show how the graviphotons avoid the ‘no photons on the brane’ result because they do not originate from Maxwell's equations in D =5 but rather from odd-dimensional self-duality equations. In the case of the fivebrane, the Randall–Sundrum mechanism also provides a new Kaluza–Klein way of obtaining chiral supergravity starting from non-chiral.

    Abstract:

    This study highlights the value of museum collections in invasion biology. It focuses on introduced tilapias, Oreochromis niloticus and Coptodon Rendalli in the Congo Basin and their monogenean (Platyhelminthes) gill parasite fauna. O. niloticus was introduced throughout the Congo Basin while C. Rendalli was introduced into the Lower Congo, but is native to the Middle and Upper Congo. In order to study the impact of these stocking events on the native parasite community we investigate the co-introduction and host switching of their parasites. Post-introduction material is compared with pre-introduction samples from museum collections of 5 native tilapias in the Congo Basin. Nine of the known parasites of O. niloticus were co-introduced, while one, Cichlidogyrus rognoni , is missing and possibly not established. In contrast, no parasite species were found co-introduced with C. Rendalli into the Lower Congo. The parasite fauna of Tilapia sparrmanii shared no species with O. niloticus . Oreochromis mweruensis shared five species with O. niloticus , but these were also found on the pre-introduction samples, and are considered native to both hosts. We report three putative host switches: Cichlidogyrus sclerosus and Cichlidogyrus tilapiae to Coptodon tholloni in the Lower Congo Basin and Gyrodactylus nyanzae to C. Rendalli in the Upper Congo.

    Abstract:

    Randall‘s plaques are found in a large number of calcium oxalate stone formers today. From an epidemiological point of view, we observed a constant increase in the proportion of calcium oxalate stones developed from a Randall’s plaque in France over the past forty years. Stones developed on a Randall‘s plaque typically present a small depressed zone (named umbilication) corresponding to the tip of the papilla and containing some material detached from the plaque. Thus, by examining the morphology of the stone, we can determine the part of urinary calculi initiated from a Randall’s plaque. The proportion of Randall plaque-related stones was assessed over 3 time periods: 1989–1991, 1999–2001, and 2009–2011. Because modern techniques used to remove urinary calculi from the urinary tract often use laser or ultrasounds or shock waves, Randall’s plaque is often lost during the treatment. However, around 50% of all stones are spontaneously passed and 10-15% of stones are removed from the urinary tract without fragmentation. So, we examined the morphology of 30,149 non fragmented calcium oxalate stones and we found that 10,282 harbored Randall plaque residues (34.1%). The prevalence of Randall plaque-related stones increased dramatically during the past years. In young women, 17% of calcium oxalate stones were associated with Randall plaque during the 1989–1991 period, but the proportion rose to 59% 20 years later (P
