  • Republicanism and global justice a sketch
    Social Science Research Network, 2011
    Co-Authors: Cecile Laborde
    Abstract:

Prima facie, Republicanism has a blind spot about global justice. The republican tradition seems to have little to say about pressing international issues such as world poverty or global inequalities. According to the old, if apocryphal, adage: extra rempublicam nulla justitia. Some may doubt that distributive justice (as opposed to freedom or citizenship) is the primary virtue of republican institutions; and at any rate most would agree that republican values have traditionally been realised in the polis not in the (oxymoronic) cosmopolis. In this paper, I sketch a republican account of global non-domination which suggests that duties of distributive justice are not necessarily bounded to the institutions of a single society. In particular, I argue that republicans have good reasons to seek to curb those global inequalities which underpin what I call capability-denying domination. Because my main purpose is to set out an agenda for research in a still largely unexplored area, I can only provide here a preliminary sketch of this republican argument for global justice. In fact, it is not part of my claim that the Republicanism offers a full, coherent account of global justice; nor that Republicanism is a more attractive theory than existing liberal cosmopolitan theory. I merely attempt to conceptualise the distinctive features of a republican approach to global justice, leaving a full assessment of its merits for subsequent enquiry.

  • Gorros frigios en la Guerra Fría. El socialismo republicano de E. P. Thompson
'Edicions de la Universitat de Barcelona', 2021
    Co-Authors: Martínez-cava Aguilar Julio
    Abstract:

The socialist tradition inherited and continued the values of modern democratic Republicanism. E. P. Thompson, as a historian and communist intellectual, broke new ground in vindicating Jacobin and Enlightenment values against the intellectual orthodoxies of the Cold War that divided Europe. In doing so, he built a democratic socialism, inspired by British history and the internationalism of the Popular Fronts, which would nourish the activism of the New Left and the peace movement. Creating a democratic political culture, curbing the influence of wealth, and broadening and giving new meaning to democratic rights were the goals of this Jacobin socialism

  • The elusive and difficult construction of national identity in Gran Colombia
    'Universidad EAFIT', 2019
Co-Authors: Uribe De Hincapié, María Teresa
    Abstract:

In this paper, Professor María Teresa Uribe de Hincapié proposes two quite novel fields of analysis for the study of the political history of the country. The first refers to the pivotal role of civic Republicanism language during the emancipation process and throughout the nineteenth century. The second pertains to the identification of the patriotic rhetoric that served as an anchor to make identity referents close and familiar, in the emotional realm, and feasible, in the political realm. The text argues that, in the absence of pre-xisting cultural identities and given the urgent need to create a political identity that would break with a past associated with the colonial regime, the New Granada intelligentsia found in the narratives of grievances, exclusion, usurpation and spilled blood the possibility of constructing a meaningful history, a glorious past and an authentic image of the nation

  • cicero roman Republicanism and the contested meaning of libertas
    Political Studies, 2014
    Co-Authors: Geoff Kennedy
    Abstract:

Despite growing interest in neo-Roman Republicanism, few republicans examine the character of Roman Republicanism, either in its constitutional practice, its social relations or in the works of its primary defenders. This article examines Cicero's two systematic dialogues of political philosophy – De Re Publica and De Legibus – in order to assess the status of liberty as ‘non-domination’ in these texts. It argues that, far from liberty as non-domination being the operative conceptual ideal in Cicero's Republicanism, concordia along with equity as a form of proportionate equality that depends upon the recognition of substantive differences of status and power serves as the foundation of his republican political thought. This form of ordered liberty is offered as an alternative to the conception of liberty as a form of ‘non-domination’ that Cicero attributes to the democracies of ancient Greece and the populist project of popular reformers such as Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus.
