    Abstract:

    In today's Internet economy, new business models emerge to respond to business opportunities that one organization alone can not exploit. Virtual organizations (VOs) are a prominent example for such models currently investigated in, e.g., collaborative engineering and aggregated Services provisioning. The partner selection process is a problem that needs to be swiftly performed for a VO to become operational. In the global Internet community, previously unknown partners have to be considered for important business transactions, taking a risk in expecting partners to behave reliably. A Reputation Service can help to reduce this risk by supporting the (automated) decision process of system integrators inquiring about potential partner organizations. This paper presents a Service-based Reputation system rooting trust in an organization’s inherent observable properties, called trust indicators. A taxonomy to classify trust indicators according to their semantic meaning is proposed. Furthermore, a stochastic trust indicator model based on distribution functions is presented, taking updates and trust indicator aggregation towards an overall Reputation using Bayes theory into account as well.

    Abstract:

    Virtual Organizations (VOs) are an emerging business model in today’s Internet economy. Increased specialization and focusing on an organization’s core competencies requires such novel models to address business opportunities. In a VO, a set of sovereign, geographically dispersed organizations temporarily pool their resources to jointly address a business opportunity. The decision making process determining which potential partners are invited to join the VO is crucial with respect to entire VO’s success. A Reputation system can provide additional decision support besides the a priori knowledge about potential partners. To achieve this in this demonstrator, Reputation, an objective trust measure, is aggregated from multiple independent trust sources that inherently characterize an organization’s reliability. To allow for the desired predictions of an organization’s future performance, a stochastic modeling approach is chosen. This demonstrator presents a research prototype of the full Reputation Service for VOs including a web based User Interface.

    Reputation mechanisms, which can be used in organisational environments, have been developed during last few years as valid methods to allow agents to better select their partners. In most of works presented in the literature, Reputation is summarised as a value, typically a number, that represents an opinion sent by an agent to another about a certain third party. In this work, we put forward a novel concept of Reputation-based agreement in order to support the Reputation definition, as well as, some desirable properties about it.We define a Reputation Service that collects opinions from agents, so creating agreements over situations. This Service will also be in charge of presenting the information by using different informative mechanisms. On the other hand, we analyse how to enforce agents to send their opinions to the Reputation Service by adding incentive mechanisms. Finally, two different case studies are presented to exemplify our work.
