  • Opportunities for systematic change in the academic Research Library: elements of the post-digital Library
    Insights: The UKSG Journal, 2012
    Co-Authors: James G. Neal
    Abstract:

This paper, based on a talk delivered at the University of Leeds on 19 April 2011, seeks to outline a series of important trends that are influencing the roles and responsibilities of the academic Research Library, and a program of radical collaboration that would enable deeper integration of resources and a more systemic approach to the critical collection and service challenges. The academic Research Library must sustain its core responsibilities, albeit in an increasingly digitized, networked and mobile condition, enrich fundamental relationships with its user communities, and assume powerful new roles in support of learning and scholarship. New measures of quality, impact, productivity, innovation and leadership must be advanced. The paper suggests that the evolution of the academic Library will focus more on an evolving period of polygamy, parabiosis and particularism, as we think beyond the transition to electronic and more about a post-digital context.

  • Research Library leadership development : Creating a best practice
    IFLA publications, 2007
Co-Authors: James G. Neal, Victoria Owen, William Garrison
    Abstract:

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) created a Research Library Leadership Fellows (RLLF) program to develop the skills of prospective Research Library leaders. The program curriculum was designed to build on self-assessment in a group-learning setting and to explore strategic issues that are most pressing for future leaders of large Research libraries. These topics shaped the design of three, week-long Strategic Issues Institutes that each featured leaders active in the ARL community. The RLLF curriculum was enhanced through site visits to participating ARL libraries and attendance at ARL Membership Meetings. Specific components of the RLLF program are described from the instructional design, to Fellow selection and participation, program roll-out, and evaluation. The RLLF program models a best practice in the area of continuing leadership development and succession planning.

  • our collective wisdom succession planning and the arl Research Library leadership fellows program
    Journal of Library Administration, 2009
Co-Authors: Duane Webster, Deetta Jones Young
    Abstract:

ABSTRACT Academic and Research libraries are joining together to identify and better prepare the next generation of Library directors. The Research Library Leadership Fellows (RLLF) Program takes a new approach to succession planning by engaging a select group of sponsoring libraries, approximately 20 emergent leaders, and the membership of the Association Research Libraries working collaboratively over a 2-year period. This approach assumes a well-developed set of management and leadership skills on the part of the fellow. The program focuses instead on deepening the fellow's understanding of core strategic challenges facing senior Library leaders in a wide variety of campus settings. The RLLF embraces 3 5-day, on-campus institutes, 1–2 site visits to sponsoring libraries, and participation in the semiannual Association of Research Libraries (ARL) membership meetings. The program also provides network-building among the fellows, Web-based sessions on key issues, and access to ARL member–Library directors...
