SangjoonAbstract:Describes an architecture for a tightly coupled conferencing system on an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network. In order to provide multicast service, we construct a multicast environment using a multicast address Resolution Server (MARS) and multicast Servers (MCSs). The architecture provides conference control services which provide tight coordination of conference membership over the environment. The services are provided by a conference control Server (CCS). We propose a secondary CCS in order to support fault tolerance. When the primary CCS fails to perform its service, the secondary CCS rakes over the control and continues conferencing without stopping.

HICSS - A multicasting scheme using multiple MCSs for reducing end-to-end path delay in ATM networks

We also proposed two models, fully multiple MCS model and hybrid multiple MCS model, to support multiple MCSs over a single large cluster in ATM networks, and evaluated the performance of the fully multiple MCS model by simulation. When an ATM host requests joining a specific multicast group, the MARS designates a proper MCS among the multiple MCSs for the group member to minimize the average path delay between the sender and the group members. This scheme constructs a two-phase partial multicast tree based upon the shortest path algorithm. We reduced the average path delay in the multicast tree using this scheme with various cluster topologies and MCS distribution scenarios, and also distributed load uniformly among multiple MCSs.

Network design for streaming service on IP multicast over ATM

IkedaAbstract:This paper considers streaming service, which is an application of multicast communications, and discusses the network configuration used in providing IP multicast over ATM. In IP multicast over ATM, conversion from the IP multicast address to the ATM address is required. One of the methods of making this conversion is to use a multicast address Resolution Server (MARS). In this system, the MARS manages the member information of the multicast group. When there is a change in the membership of the group because a host joins or leaves, that host sends an information renewal message to the MARS. In streaming service, there arises a time zone in which many renewal messages to MARS are generated due to program changes and the like, so that the MARS is heavily burdened. This paper considers the case in which streaming service is introduced via MARS, and analytically derives the transmission frequency of the information renewal messages. The relations between the transmission frequency, the characteristics of the program, and the network scale are identified. Based on the results of analysis and a consideration of the effect of other traffic on the network, an adequate network design principle capable of reducing the control traffic to the MARS is presented. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. MARS load analysis of streaming service on IP multicast over ATM

IkedaAbstract:The Internet is now a widely used network and is expected to accommodate many kinds of services in an integrated manner. One of these promising services is a streaming service such as video or radio streaming. In the Internet, this streaming service should be supported by multicast communications, i.e. IP multicast, in order to reduce total bandwidth necessary for distributing streaming programs. In future network infrastructure, ATM technology should be implemented in a backbone network. So, in order to integrate opposite-side two network architecture. IP and ATM, IP Multicast over ATM technology is proposed in IETF. In this technology, Multicast Address Resolution Server (MARS) is used for address Resolution generally. On changing group membership, MARS receives control message informing membership change from ATM end points, edge routers. Multicast group may grow up to thousands of recipient in the case of streaming service. Overload of MARS due to message concentration is one of the most serious problems for streaming service in the Internet. In this paper we analyze load for MARS brought by control message according to multicast group management for streaming service. With numerical results, we discuss about suitable network configuration for scalable streaming service.
