The forests of North America constitute a fragile, symbiotic ecosystem, nurtured by an abundance of plants, animals, water, and other natural Resources. For some, the main purpose of the forest is to produce marketable products such as wood and paper. Others view the forests as a recreational setting for camping, hiking and enjoyment of nature. Scientists study forest ecosystems to attain a greater understanding of the forces of nature and their natural processes. In order to satisfy the needs of those who look to the forests for livelihoods or enjoyment, it is critical to manage and maintain our forests with programs and policies that promote sustainability and wise use. DEFINING SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY grapples with the definition of sustainable forestry and the lack of consensus about the components of a sustainable ecosystem. The book is arranged in three parts consisting of papers by experts from academia, industry, and government who present their perspectives on sustainable forest management. Part I, examines issues of forest management in a holistic setting. The authors attempt to define sustainable forestry and stress ecosystem sustainability in which all species in the biologically complex forests can thrive. They challenge us to better understand the relationships among people, forest Resources, and ecosystem complexity. There is agreement that sustainable systems must be ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially desirable. Forest management programs which include these criteria are taking the right approach to assuring that our forests will be preserved for current and future generations. Nevertheless, ideas about how to achieve sustainability vary widely. Part II offers regional approaches to designing sustainable forest ecosystems. Comprehensive programs of regional forest management are presented which best suit the needs of the pacific northwest; northern hardwood and conifer region; southeastern United States; central hardwood region, and the inland west. John C. Gordon, in the final paper in this section, succinctly summarizes the regional approaches with five simple rules: 1. manage locally; 2. include human influence; 3. define system boundaries and move them when necessary; 4. know your system and the mechanisms that operate in that environment, and 5. include all components of the system when making decisions. In Part 3, the authors remind readers that social, political, economic, ecological and aesthetic considerations impinge upon forest use. Quality forest management must involve the proper balance among human needs and all the fauna and flora that rely on forest ecosystems for sustenance. If forests are to be maintained for future generations, planners cannot separate the values and ethics of forest management from other components. This holistic framework will prove to be the most desirable way to establish sustainable forestry in North America.

Degradation of the environment and depletion of the world's natural Resources is a global problem facing both rich and poor nations. Future population increases, and the continued use of natural Resources to meet the needs of an expanding world, place a strain on the Resource base and jeopardize future sustainability of the ecosystem. Sustainable Investment and Resource Use is a study commissioned by UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme to examine the use of natural Resources and the components involved in Resource use investment. According to Young, Resource-right policies are preferable to policies based upon command and control. If Resource-right systems are well-designed, the public will find a diversity of ways to invest in Resource use and will adopt strategies that avoid the failures of well-intentioned government programs. The author offers alternatives to current use patterns and policy changes designed to stimulate investment in sustainable Resources. Young focuses on three policy goals - Environmental Integrity, Economic Efficiency, and Equity (the three E's). Environmental integrity involves recognition of the functions of ecosystems and responses to dynamics of change and use. Economic efficiency requires that internal and external costs be imposed upon users of the Resources by taking into account the distribution of wealth, Resource rights, and institutional arrangements. Equity is concerned with distribution of benefits, incomes, and profits and the tradeoffs between individual decisions and the collective impact on society. Investments in Resource use by governments or the private sector should reflect policies that enhance the protection of scarce Resources and improve future prospects. Young encourages governments to adopt ecologically astute policies that will stimulate investment in Resource use. By changing the way societies view their Resource base and by implementation of the appropriate restraints, compromises and regulations, sustainability can be achieved and maintained. A set of thirty three prescriptions for remedying the ills of Resource misuse are discussed. Young points out that economic concepts of Resource use comprise institutional arrangements and human behavior patterns that effect the production and distribution of goods and services for the society as a whole. In his view, there is a need for changes in the macroeconomic and microeconomic policies regarding Resource use. In macroeconomic approaches, a country can increase the scale of economic activity and average per capita welfare through a variety of economic activities that allow the environment to accommodate population increases without depleting Resource stocks or environmental quality. Microeconomic approaches involve changes in the market structure which require users and abusers of the environment to pay for benefits and services and compensate beneficiaries of favorable environments for

Talk About: E-Resources Librarian to the Rescue? Creating the Über Librarian: Turning Model Job Descriptions into Practical Positions

ArthurAbstract:Libraries are assessing the need for a separate electronic Resource Librarian and identifying where managing e-Resources fits into the organizational structure. If such a position is warranted, what does it look like? Feedback from the 2004 conference evaluations suggested having a topical discussion session to hear many ideas and find out what has and has not worked. Questions pointed to the need for a better understanding of the responsibilities of these positions and the need to identify the knowledge required to perform at a high level. Salary concerns were also expressed, as was the prevalence of trial and error training. A good mix of Librarians from various types of institutions participated in two lively discussions exploring these and other issues related to the successful management of electronic Resources.
