Oil behavior in sea ice: Changes in chemical composition and Resultant Effect on sea ice dielectrics.

SternAbstract:There has been increasing urgency to develop methods for detecting oil in sea ice owing to the Effects of climate change in the Arctic. A multidisciplinary study of crude oil behavior in a sea ice environment was conducted at the University of Manitoba during the winter of 2016. In the experiment, medium-light crude oil was injected underneath young sea ice in a mesocosm. The physical and thermodynamic properties of the oil-infiltrated sea ice were monitored over a three-week time span, with concomitant analysis of the oil composition using analytical instrumentation. A resonant perturbation technique was used to measure the oil dielectric properties, and the contaminated sea ice dielectric properties were modeled using a mixture model approach. Results showed that the interactions between the oil and sea ice altered their physical and thermodynamic properties. These changes led to an overall decrease in sea ice dielectrics, potentially detectable by remote sensing systems.

TaylorAbstract:BACKGROUND Timing of frontofacial surgery for the syndromic craniosynostosis as it relates to various surgical risks has not been adequately studied. The purpose of this study was to investigate posterior dental complications of midface advancement in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis undergoing surgery at different ages and the Effects on subsequent orthognathic surgery. METHODS A retrospective chart review of patients with syndromic craniosynostosis treated with midface advancement (monobloc or Le Fort III) from 1999 to 2018 was carried out. Patient demographics, records, and imaging studies were reviewed. A subanalysis of those patients who were also treated with orthognathic surgery from 2014 to 2018 with imaging studies available for analysis was also performed. RESULTS Thirty-seven patients met the inclusion criteria. Sixty-four percent of the patients had radiographic evidence of maxillary molar dental abnormality. Older age at the time of surgery was significantly associated with a lower odds of sustaining dental injury (OR, 0.55; p = 0.034). The odds of damaging second or third maxillary molars was significantly higher with a younger age at the time of surgery (p = 0.021 and p = 0.034). The odds of sustaining dental injury increased moving posteriorly, showing the risk of abnormal pattern of M3 greater than M2 greater than M1. Advanced age at the time of surgery was significantly associated with decreased odds of dental injury (OR, 0.55; p = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS Damage to the developing permanent maxillary molars may affect orthodontic management, mastication, and potentially maxillary development. Delaying frontofacial surgery until development of the permanent maxillary dentition should be considered if other indications do not mandate earlier intervention.

A total of 120 UC patients who were admitted to this hospital for treatment between May 2014 and February 2018 were enrolled in this study and divided randomly into the research group and control group, with 60 patients in each group. For patients in the two groups, they underwent medication via mesalazine, while those in the research group additionally received the medication by Bifid Triple Viable Capsules. Following treatment, we evaluated the clinical efficacy, as well as the disease activity index (DAI) of UC, score of clinical symptoms, changes in the inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-8 and IL-10) and the adverse reactions to drugs before and after treatment. The total Effectiveness rate in the research group was 90.0%, significantly higher than 72.5% in the control group, and the difference had statistical significance (P 0.05); however, after treatment, both of UCDAI and clinical symptoms scores were decreased evidently in two groups (P<0.05), while the decreases in the research group were more significant (P < 0.05). In addition, following treatment, the levels of TNF-α and IL-8 were all decreased in two groups, with an acute increase in IL-10 (all P<0.01), and the alterations in these indicators in the research group were much more significant than those in the control group (all P <0.05). For adverse reactions, the incidence rate in the research group was 6.67%, significantly lower than 33.33% in the control group (P <0.05). Mesalazine in combination with Bifid Triple Viable Capsules shows a magnificent protective Effect on the mucosa of UC patients, and curb the UC-related inflammatory reactions Effectively. Thus, it is a safe and reliable method that is worthy of being promoted in clinical practice.
