Provided by either consumers or third‐party professionals, online Reviews influence consumer purchasing decisions and hence sales. Individuals have conflicting incentives of free riding and contributing to social capital when writing Reviews. We leverage a “natural experiment,” which led to an exogenous expansion in the user population of a major online Review Platform, to better understand the trade‐off. Our empirical findings are mainly twofold. First, we find that a larger population of audience and peer Review writers, an immediate consequence of the exogenous shock, cause individuals to write more Reviews with higher quality and assign higher but also more diverse ratings. In addition, we find heterogeneity in peer effects by user activeness, expertise, and popularity. Our findings have implications for companies in managing online feedbacks and for Platforms that rely on user contributions.

Individuals have incentives of free riding and maximizing social capital when providing feedbacks online. We leverage a “natural experiment,” which led to an exogenous expansion in the user population of a major online Review Platform to better understand the trade-off between the two conflicting incentives. Our empirical findings are mainly two-fold. First, we find that a larger population of audience and peer Review writers, an immediate consequence of the exogenous shock, causally led to more Reviews posted, higher and more diverse ratings assigned, and Reviews of higher quality by the users. In addition, we find that these effects were moderated by user characteristics of activeness, expertise, and popularity. These results have implications for Platforms that rely on user contributions and for any company in the management of online product or service feedback.

As QA requirements have increased in complexity in parallel with evolution of radiation therapy (RT) delivery, a need to facilitate digital data exchange emerged. Our objective is to present the Platform developed for the integration and standardization of QART activities across all EORTC trials involving RT. Methods: The following essential requirements were identified: secure and easy access without on-site software installation; integration within the existing EORTC clinical remote data capture system; and the ability to both customize the Platform to specific studies and adapt to future needs. After retrospective testing within several clinical trials, the Platform was introduced in phases to participating sites and QART study Reviewers. Results: The resulting QA Platform, integrating RT analysis software installed at EORTC Headquarters, permits timely, secure, and fully digital central DICOM-RT based data Review. Participating sites submit data through a standard secure upload webpage. Supplemental information is submitted in parallel through web-based forms. An internal quality check by the QART office verifies data consistency, formatting, and anonymization. QART Reviewers have remote access through a terminal server. Reviewers evaluate submissions for protocol compliance through an online evaluation matrix. Comments are collected by the coordinating centre and institutions are informed of the results. Conclusions: This web-based central Review Platform facilitates rapid, extensive, and prospective QART Review. This reduces the risk that trial outcomes are compromised through inadequate radiotherapy and facilitates correlation of results with clinical outcomes. © 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Within a national project we evaluated the feasibility of a central Review Platform and its role in improving uniformity of clinical target volume (CTV) delineation in daily practice. Material and methods All Belgian radiotherapy departments were invited to participate and were asked to upload CTVs for rectal cancer treatment onto a secured server. These were centrally Reviewed and feedback was given per e-mail. For each five consecutive patients per centre, the overlap parameter dice coefficient (DC) and the volumetric parameters volumetric ratio (RV) and commonly contoured volume (VCC) were calculated. Results Twenty departments submitted 1224 eligible cases of which 909 were modified (74.3%). There was a significant increase in RV and VCC between the first ten patients per centre and the others. This was not seen for DC. Statistical analysis did not show a further significant improvement in delineation over the entire Review period. Conclusion Central Review was feasible and increased the uniformity in CTV delineation in the first ten rectal cancer patients per centre. The observations in this study can be used to optimize future QA initiatives. © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
