  • Frequency Estimation for Non-pilot Mode of DVB-S2 System
    2020
    Co-Authors: Sooyeob Jung, Deock-gil Oh
    Abstract:

In this paper, we present a frequency estimation method for non-pilot mode of digital video broadcasting-satellite second generation (DVB-S2) System, which is based on a Rife and Boorstyn (R&B) algorithm. The proposed approach consists of the coarse and fine frequency estimation, which is performed by using a physical layer header (PLHEADER) instead of pilot symbols. In addition, it is required a modulation and code rate (MODCOD) decoding to obtain the PLHEADER. Compared with the other frequency estimation methods, the proposed method is very powerful in terms of both the estimation range and frequency offset sensitivity. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation results.

  • two step scheduling scheme to support fairness and qos in dvb S2 System
Ksii Transactions on Internet and Information Systems, 2015
Co-Authors: Mankyu Park, Dongbae Kang, Deock-gil Oh
    Abstract:

The use of an efficient packet scheduling scheme for a forward link in satellite communication networks is very important to support fairness for each return channel satellite terminal (RCST) and the service differentiations for user traffics. To support fairness and QoS for each RCST with service-level agreement (SLA), the Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) System in a satellite hub has to process packets with considering modulation and coding (MODCOD) and packet types. Although a DVB-S2 System with ACM scheme has higher transmission efficiency, it cannot offer fairness or quality of service (QoS) to RCSTs. Because the data are transmitted with high MODCOD in regions with clear skies, while data are transmitted using low MODCOD in regions experiencing rain events. In this paper, we propose a two-step scheduling scheme offering fairness and QoS to RCSTs, while minimizing a decrease in throughput. The proposed scheme is carried out performance evaluations using a computer simulation. As results of this simulation, the proposed scheduler was shown to support bandwidth fairness to an individual RCST, and provide a level of QoS differentiation for user traffics.

  • ICTC - Wideband satellite transmission in DVB-S2 System using time-slicing method
2015 International Conference on Information and Communication Technology Convergence (ICTC), 2015
    Co-Authors: Sooyeob Jung, Deock-gil Oh
    Abstract:

In this paper, we present the wideband satellite transmission in the DVB-S2 System using a time-slicing method. Compared with a conventional transmission method in the DVB-S2 System, a time-slicing method assigns the different TSNs to each stream data providing multi-channel service in the modulator. In the demodulator, it is only filtered the TSN corresponding to channel service allowing a user and the stream data with the filtered TSN is demodulated and decoded. Therefore, the DVB-S2 System using a time-slicing method can process the necessary stream data instead of the total stream data and can considerably reduce the data processing time.

  • robust and reliable frame synchronization method for dvb S2 System
    Wireless Telecommunications Symposium, 2010
Co-Authors: Yulong Zhang, Xubin Chen, Xiaoyang Zeng
    Abstract:

In this paper, a robust and reliable frame synchronization method is developed for satellite-based DVB-S2 System. To perform frame synchronization accurately and rapidly under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratios and large carrier frequency offset, a novel frame synchronization scheme combining pilot-symbol-assisted differential correlation with double-peak search algorithm is analytically investigated and evaluated by extensive simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve much lower false synchronization probability in comparison with the existing ones with low complexity overhead. Furthermore, time to acquire frame synchronization is reduced to a desirable level, even under much worse channel condition than specified.

  • optimized digital automatic gain control for dvb S2 System
    Wireless Telecommunications Symposium, 2010
Co-Authors: Yulong Zhang, Chuan Wu, Xiaoyang Zeng
    Abstract:

In DVB-S2 receiver, the demodulator needs accurate soft information about the received symbol distance from the reference constellation points. Digital automatic gain control is adopted to adjust the level of the incoming symbols to the reference constellations to help obtaining a good demodulator performance. In this paper, an optimized digital automatic gain control method for DVB-S2 System is presented based on the analysis of a novel reasonable cost function and the potential constellation property. The proposed scheme can operate adequately well over the demanded range of signal-to-noise ratio and support both with pilot and without pilot modes with much lower complexity. The mathematical derivation of the scheme is given in detail and the advantages over the conventional methods are clearly demonstrated by simulation results.

  • An area-efficient and degree-computationless BCH decoder for DVB-S2
2009 IEEE 8th International Conference on ASIC, 2009
Co-Authors: Zhou Chen, Yulong Zhang, Chuan Wu, Yan Ying, Xiaoyang Zeng
    Abstract:

This paper presents an area-efficient BCH decoder for DVB-S2 System. The proposed architecture can support all 11 code rates in DVB-S2. Based on the modified Euclidean algorithm (MEA), The BCH decoder has a low hardware complexity with the folding and degree computationless architecture in key equation solver (KES) block. Further more, the multiplier in Galois Field is also optimized to reduce the hardware complexity. The proposed decoder requires at least 16% fewer gates than the conventional RS/BCH decoders and can work up to 277MHz, which meets the speed requirements of the System1.

  • low complexity synchronizer using common autocorrelator for dvb S2 System
Journal of Semiconductor Technology and Science, 2009
Co-Authors: Jang Woong Park, Myung Hoon Sunwoo, Dae-ig Chang
    Abstract:

This paper presents an efficient synchronizer architecture using a common autocorrelator for Digital Video Broadcasting via Satellite, Second generation (DVB-S2). To achieve the required performance under the worst channel condition and to implement the efficient H/W resource utilization of functional synchronization blocks, we propose a new efficient common autocorrelator structure. The proposed architecture can decrease about 92% of multipliers and 81% of adders compared with the direct implementation. Moreover, the proposed architecture has been thoroughly verified in XilinxTM Virtex IV and R&STM SFU (Signaling and Formatting Unit) broad-cast test equipment.

  • robust frame synchronization for the dvb S2 System with large frequency offsets
International Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, 2009
    Co-Authors: R Pedone, Dae-ig Chang, G E Corazza, M Villanti, Alessandro Vanellicoralli, Deock-gil Oh
    Abstract:

This paper tackles the problem of frame synchronization design for the Digital Video Broadcasting standard via Satellite (DVB-S2) System. In particular, the design of a novel frame detection scheme exhibiting robustness against large frequency errors is proposed. Post-detection integration (PDI) is exploited to provide coarse frame alignment with limited complexity with respect to classical approximate maximum likelihood (ML) solutions. The novel scheme, denoted as differential generalized post-detection integration, derives from a pragmatic adaptation of the well-known generalized PDI scheme (IEEE Trans. Commun. 2007; 55(11):2159–2171), which eliminates its inherent source of weakness in the presence of large frequency offsets, i.e. its non-differential component given by non-coherent PDI. The proposed approach manages to reduce the remarkable performance gap with respect to approximate ML techniques available in the literature (IEEE Trans. Commun. 2002; 50(7):1062–1065), providing the designer with an interesting performance/complexity trade-off. Performance is numerically evaluated in terms of receiver operating characteristics and mean acquisition time (MAT), handling the acquisition procedure according to a single-dwell approach. Both threshold crossing and MAX criterion are contrasted to identify the best design solution. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

  • low complexity soft decision demapper for high order modulation of dvb S2 System
    International SoC Design Conference, 2008
Co-Authors: Jang Woong Park, Myung Hoon Sunwoo, Dae-ig Chang
    Abstract:

This paper presents an efficient soft-decision demapper interface and a low complexity demapper for high-order modulation scheme. The proposed soft-decision demapper interface can operate at a symbol rate and replace the parallel to serial converter by locating between the M-PSK demodulator and the soft-decision demapper. In addition, the proposed soft-decision demapper can reduce the hardware complexity by reusing the multipliers. Moreover, the proposed demapper can support high-order modulation modes. The proposed architectures have been thoroughly verified using a FPGA board having the the Xilinxtrade Virtex II.

  • BICMC and TD Comparative Performance Study of 16-APSK Signal Variants for DVB-S2 Systems
    IEEE Communications Letters, 2015
    Co-Authors: Vassilis Dalakas, G E Corazza, S. Papaharalabos, P. Takis Mathiopoulos, E. Alberto Candreva, Alessandro Vanelli-coralli
    Abstract:

A comparative performance study, in terms of Bit Interleaved Coded Modulation Capacity (BICMC) and Total Degradation (TD), between Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (APSK) signal variants for the 2nd generation Digital Video Broadcasting via Satellite (DVB-S2) System is presented. Motivated by the observation that the presence of more signal points in the outer ring of 16-APSK signals appears to improve the performance in a non-linear (NL) channel, we investigate the performance of 2–14 and 3–13 APSK signals with two novel bit-to-symbol mappings as alternatives to the 4–12 APSK, which is currently proposed as the modulation scheme for the DVB-S2 standard. Performance evaluation results are obtained for an air-interface based on this standard, which includes a Non-Linear (NL) High Power Amplifier (HPA), predistortion, raised cosine Nyquist filters and Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. Performance results have shown that the proposed 3–13 APSK signal not only achieves the best BICMC performance with higher gains occurring at high signal-to-noise ratios, but also outperforms, in terms of TD performance, all the other considered 16-ary APSK signal variants.

  • enhanced frame synchronization for dvb S2 System under a large of frequency offset
Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, 2007
    Co-Authors: G E Corazza, Dae-ig Chang, R Pedone, M Villanti, Deock-gil Oh
    Abstract:

This paper investigates the possible robust technique of frame synchronization for DVB-S2 System. Basically, we focus on the improvement of correlation characteristic, instead of establishing the strategy of frame synchronization with optimal scenario due to variable transmission frame lengths of DVB-S2 standard. To cope with a large frequency offset as a maximum 20% value normalized to symbol rate, the differential generalized post detection integration scheme is newly proposed in the paper. The fruitful results of the paper are described by the suitable analytical approach through parameter optimization. The proposed scheme is shown to provide a good trade-off relation between complexity and performance and is verified in detail their improved performance.
