    Abstract:

    This article presents an experience that extends the traditional practice of classical educational robotics (ER), typical of primary and secondary Schools, to a new didactic tool. Its aim is to link vocational and secondary Schools to the completion of the School Career in advanced technologies to gain access to high-technology jobs. The reported experience lasted one year and was intended for students with a high-School degree. The experience culminated with students applying theoretical knowledge to develop an autonomous robot. The course aimed to develop knowledge and skills for mature and effective operators who could directly enter the high-technology labor market. The first edition of the course has just reached its end, successfully achieving the original goals, mostly thanks to the integrated hands-on approach.

    ABSTRACTCreating effective pathways for students to transition from high School to college or Career is immensely important and, although challenging, some have developed promising approaches. This case study examined how formal and informal leaders in an urban high School and district collaborated to implement a college and Career academy model, utilizing distributed-leadership theory as a lens. Data analysis yielded seven themes. This study’s documentation of considerable leadership distribution outside the organization is unique within the literature and underscores the need for researchers and practitioners to consider the important contribution of community leaders in promoting college and Career readiness.

  • Racial/Ethnic and Gender Equity Patterns in Illinois High School Career and Technical Education Coursework

    Abstract:

    This study analyzed high School Career and Technical Education (CTE) enrollments in Illinois, with comparisons to national data when possible, by Career cluster and pathway and with respect to gender and racial/ethnic makeup of students. Enrollment patterns in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) CTE programming were emphasized. Gender and ethnicity-based inequities were found in certain areas and more equitable patterns were apparent in others. Of concern, student enrollment in courses fitting within STEM pathways included substantially greater male than female participation (64.1% male vs. 35.9% female), whereas other pathways showed the reverse enrollment pattern (45.0% male and 55.0% female). With respect to ethnicity, all subgroups except White students were underrepresented in CTE programming in general. The underrepresentation was exacerbated for all but Asian students when concerning STEM CTE programming. Considering implications, we recommend heightened focus, support, and goal setting concerning equity of CTE programming.

    Abstract:

    This study addresses the question “Do School-to-work programs, as embodied by Career academies, facilitate postsecondary education?†The author conceptualizes postsecondary education as a series of steps through the university and examines the high School Career academy's influence on entrance into, route through, and outcomes from a 4-year university. Data are drawn from applicant and student records at a comprehensive, urban university for all individuals originating from a single district's high Schools. The findings suggest that students from Career academies have higher academic achievement upon leaving high School, less need for remediation in English at the university, and a 4-percentage-point increase in graduation from the university than students who are not from academies. These findings suggest that School-to-work programs could facilitate positive outcomes in postsecondary education. However, the continued high rates of remediation and the low rates of graduation, even for students from Career academics, suggest that their influence might not be enough to ensure success in postsecondary education. This analysis therefore suggests that further research should identify program components that increase postsecondary education and determine how these components can be institutionalized and built on in subsequent reforms.

    Abstract:

    The authors investigated the influence of a 9-week Career education class on Career decision-making self-efficacy, vocational skills self-efficacy, perceived educational barriers, outcome expectations, educational plans, and Career expectations among a sample of 166 high School sophomores. Using a nonrandomized, within-subjects crossover design, the authors collected pretest, posttest, and follow-up data with a health education class as the control condition. Post- and follow-up testing suggest that the class resulted in increased Career decision-making self-efficacy, vocational skills self-efficacy, and short-term gains in outcome expectations but did not influence perceived educational barriers. Participants enrolled in the Career education class in the first quarter were more likely to change Career plans than were those in the control condition. Implications for practice and future research are presented.
