    Abstract:

    Spinal cord (SC) injury followed by autodestruction and resection of damaged tissue necessarily leads to the formation of a gap between the disconnected cord stumps. For any attempts to reconstruct the transected cord it may accordingly be useful to narrow or close this gap. Physically this can be achieved by Vertebral resection with shortening of the spinal column. In cats and rabbits the dynamics of SC autodestruction was examined, and a technique for removal of autodestructed tissue developed, together with a surgical technique for resection of the Second Lumbar Vertebra. By means of these techniques the volume of the gap between the SC stumps in rabbits was reduced from 200 mm3 to almost zero. In future research this should allow use of neural grafts of a reasonably small volume.

    Abstract:

    A combined one stage anterior and posterior approach was used to excise a giant cell tumor involving the Second Lumbar Vertebra. The tumor involved the anterior and posterior elements of the Vertebra. A wide excision was feasible with immediate stabilization using the Luque instrumentation posteriorly and fibular strut grafts supporting the Vertebral bodies anteriorly. The followup period was 13 years. There is no recurrence, and the patient has no symptoms of disease, and the fibular grafts are fully incorporated.

    The aim of this study was to provide quantitative data on the origin and trajectory of the main renal arteries using spiral CT angiography and arteriography. Normal renal artery anatomy was assessed on spiral CT angiography (axial transverse sections and shaded-surface-display reconstructions) in 100 patients referred for renal arteriography who had no significant renal artery stenosis. Two hundred major renal arteries were studied. The vast majority of right (88 %) and left (87 %) renal arteries originated between the lower third of the first Lumbar Vertebra and the lower border of the Second Lumbar Vertebra. In 50 patients both ostia were at the same level; in the remaining 50 patients, the right ostium was located above the left in 37 patients. On the right, the angle of origin varied from -10 to + 55 degrees (mean + 24 degrees ). On the left, the angle of origin varied from + 30 to -55 degrees (mean -11 degrees ). Spiral CT angiography provides additional anatomic data, notably regarding the angle of origin of the renal arteries, that is potentially useful for planning interventional procedures.

    The radiodensity of the trabecular bone of the Lumbar Vertebrae in 16 healthy adult cats was studied using quantitative computed tomography (QCT). The average radiodensity of the trabecular bone of the Second Lumbar Vertebra was 436.1±42.1 Hounsfield units. However, there was a nonhomogeneous radiodensity distribution of the Vertebral body.

    Glucocorticoids are drugs widely used in veterinary medicine; however, besides their clinical benefits, their use can trigger undesirable effects. A clinical trial was performed on eight healthy dogs with the intent of evaluating possible alterations in the bone mineral density after therapy with prednisone using a helical computed tomography. All animals received prednisone orally at a dose of 2 mg/kg of weight for 30 days. The bone mineral density was determined by obtaining the Vertebral body radiodensity of the Second Lumbar Vertebra values immediately before and after the administration of the medication. The experimental protocol allowed for the characterization of a significant (P < 0.01) reduction of the Vertebral body radiodensity of the Second Lumbar Vertebra. At the end of the experiment, it was characterized by a loss of bone mass of approximately 14%. None of the animals presented pathologic fracture at the end of the administration of the medication. This study verified that the alterations in the bone metabolism of the dogs submitted to the therapy with prednisone in a dosage of 2 mg/kg occur rapidly, which recommends a monitoring of the patients for the prevention of pathologic fractures.
